There are several superstars who don't shoot 3s. Giannis, Kyle Lowery, Ja Morant, Demar Derozan, Bam Abeyo, Joel Embiid, just to name a few.

Simply put Stern innovated the NBA from O’Brien for ratings and more money but Silver bastardized it. I think you get my answer in relation to your question.

You literally named a few. Six to be exact. Bam is a center. Joel is a center, but he does actually shoot 3's. Giannis is a traditional four, and even he is pressured to shoot 3's. Was Tim Duncan pressured to shoot 3's? Karl Malone? Meanwhile the biggest knock in Giannis is his three point shooting when, as far as I'm concerned, he shouldn't even be attempting them.

@StumpTownStu
Embiid is not a typical center. He is the star. What your implying proves my point. The league has a position that 3s are not expected.

Aside from many.
what i don’t like is the gather step, that’s not even allowed before, traveling before, becomes a gather step, the rules is 1 2 step and shoot, not 1 2 3 layup, not 1 2 3 then shoot. im surprise they allowed that now.
looks good on some other players but im really surprise it’s the norm now.
also, the turn around fade away, where the pivot foot becomes airborne first before the none pivot foot.
Decrease the level of diffuclty and that’s not even allowed before. Maybe they get away from it. Refs getting paid to call those move before. That should be A badge for the refs and we can say nice work ref when they caught those move.
I guess not anymore.

So because he's a star, he is not a typical center?
Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwan, David Robinson, they were all stars. They weren't expected to shoot 3's. In today's NBA though... Let's just say this. This year's MVP vote came down to two centers. So it could be said, and most would agree, they are the top two centers in the league. They both shoot 3's.

@Miracling2
Yeah the gather and Euro step are horrible. Imagine if Jordan was able to do this. He would've been taking off from the three point line.

exactly. On point analogy.

I really don’t like this fadeaway move, if you play a lot of basketball in the 90s, for me that’s a cheat move, i don’t know exactly the measure of that elevated pivot foot, but if you look at it very carefully and slowly, that’s not the rules, pivot foot airborne first, no matter how many cm, that’s a travel.
been saying it before, the level of difficulty decrease big time, both feet should be airborne at the same time if you do that move, or the none pivot foot first if you can do that.
compare to mj fadeaway which is pure.
Adjust the speed at .25x and pause it at 6 seconds, pivot foot elevate first and airborne.
titled: “is lebron james fadeaway unguardable”
i say ofcourse. Nothing against lebron he’s a great player. but for me that’s a travel. Seen it many times and yeap with that talent and that cheat move, it’s unguardable.

can’t post the video. So thats the link.
sorry lebron nothing against you. He he he
But yes, if we too can get away with that move, i think majority of us will do it. Much easier compare to what is really allowed. Which is both feet airborne at the same time.
refs job to call it or the league.

turnaround fadeaway by lebron ( not that he do it all the time in his turn around fadeaway )
this one. adjust speed to .25x Pause it At 30 seconds, the pivot foot is the right foot, once that pivot foot elevates first before the none pivot foot, that’s a travel.
most of the time if we see some player do that, just by the movement of his body we’l get a hint that something is not right, then the next time he do it again we made sure we look at his foot, and for sure ain’t right. That move will be allowed if it’s a turn around side step or 1 2 step. Not when but if you activate the pivot mode, that’s travel.
compare to this one
Adjust speed to x25 near the fadeaway move, no matter where you pause it, you wont see pivot foot elevates first, and leaving the other foot on the ground planted, even in slow motion x25 speed, both feet leaves the ground at the same time.
just by the form of the body we’l know thats pure.
i didnt finish the video Though. Havent seen mj do the cheat move, il be glad to watch it if there’s one.
Just sharing.

It is an awful product.

And there were athletic freaks back then. Jordan was an absolute freak. His very, his arm length, his hand size. It's like he was a lab created two-guard. Clyde Drexler was a freak. Dominique Wilkins was a freak. True, that era also had a bunch of construction workers lacing it up. This era, with AAU basketball, kids having strength and conditioning coaches, plyo coaches, developing tall kids to be athletic wings instead of burly big men, yeah this era is overall more athletic. They are less fundamentally sound though. And as far as "more skilled", like you said, that's just a buzzword for everyone feels like they can shoot three pointers. More guys are competent ball handlers. How often to you see a nice sky hook or finger roll though. How many guys are sound defenders?

The NBA is horrible right now, everyone settling for 3's , flopping , traveling all over the place, ultra soft, lazy non rotating defenses , sloppy..
Painful for anyone who watched 70'-s to mid 90's baseball..

Good thread. Last night I just happened to watch a 5 min highlight vid of Rodman defending Bird in a game @Boston. I found it much more entertaining than the current product. TBH I’ve only watched one game this season, Celtics game 7 vs Bucks. Also maybe another 30 minutes of other games this year. ZZZzzzzzzzzzz
Like others mentioned, there’s too much chucking of treys. Not interesting. Imagine if NFL teams threw 50 yard bombs on almost every play. There’d be a few great completions, but mostly three and outs. That, too, would be unappealing.
I don’t know what they could do to improve the game. Maybe make only every other 3 ball worth three points, the others would be worth two points? That effectively would make “threes” worth 2 1/2 points, and might force teams to play closer to the basket, to get higher percentage shots.
The old game wasn’t perfect. I remember Ewing repeatedly taking 3 steps, then a bunny hop…..no call. Still, I liked it better than the current product.

I grew up inthe 70's/,80's and my father and I had a season ticket plan for the Wash Bullets from 1977-84.
I saw them win and lose a championship live in person.
Guys like Kevin Grevey/mitch Kupchak, Wes , Bobby D loved signing autographs .
Loved going to Kevin's bar near me...Manager was a BIG buffalo bills fan.
Btw, the asst principal at Flint Hill Prep my hs was mitch frerotte' s brother.
John played LB with Lawrence Taylor at unc.
Managing the Flint Hill basketball powerhouse and then the univ of miami FL and working 5 years for the Heat and Bullets , plus having friends who played in the nba has me a fan.
It's not a perfect game but it's good.

I guess I prefer the older game when teams tried to work the ball inside. Nowadays this "passing around the horn" to find an open 3-point shot reminds me of baseball after a strikeout.
My late friend was a huge fan of March Madness. At least the college game offers a wider variety of styles and the freedom to play a zone defense.

I saw a player, forgot who but he did 1-2-3-4 layup and no call for walking.
That be easy to drive if you can do that.
Seen 1-2-3 a few times with none being called.
