Punching a football is not an athletic move; anyone can throw a punch; it has nothing to do with being tough. Turnovers dramatically impact the game; I would rather see more offense which is what the NFL wants also. A dramatic 50 yd run through broken tackles and hits can be negated by some dude making a move my cousin could make.

Just kneed down baby. There is no punch at all.

try that
try that

I somewhat agree but get it. However, if you miss the ball and hit the player it should be an ejection. The rule would need to be changed as the letter of the law reads throwing a punch at an opponent whereas it's clear they're throwing the punch at the ball.

Punching at a football (but hitting the other player on their body) should be just like a pro hockey player going high-stick to stop a flying puck but hitting another player in the face instead. It's not about the intent; it's about the end result. Just happened in the Eagles/Commanders division championship game. Dude punched at ball, wholly missed the ball, and hit ball-carrier's unprotected forearm. I don't agree with full ejection, but there should definitely be a penalty--one that would have reversed that turnover.

I totally agree. I bought this up with a bunch of friends and saying that it should be an illegal move to punch with a clench fist. Because what if you miss and accidentally hit the guy in the throat that should be a personal foul right. Hope the NFL bring this up in their meetings of new rules.

Me thinks they should ban these two as take away from the spirit of football
1 -- When they tackle a guy and he rolls on top of the body of the tackler but doesn't touch the ground. That is a tackle and should be awarded as such.
2 -- The tush push. NO ONE should be allowed to push the QB from behind. He should do it on his own ... mano y mano

Anyone who’s actually played football at any level, even just high school football, knows that punching out the ball is a STANDARD defensive technique for trying to cause a fumble. Whether it’s a fist, open hand, or even a damn slap, don’t matter

I completely agree. And It wasn't always part of the game like it is now. Coaches actually make it a point and teach this stuff.
Not good....

A player has to be down to be tackled. He is down when any part of the body other than feet or hands touches the ground. If they changed that, it would create a ton of problems.
