Preview of the 2014 Miami Dolphins

Quick 2013 recap: Last year was much of the same for the Dolphins as inconsistency was their ultimate downfall. They had really good wins at Indianpolis, Pittsburgh and good home wins against New England, Cincy and SD. With the good came bad losses to Buffalo (twice), the Jets and Tampa Bay. I haven’t checked other teams, but Miami had TEN games decided by 6 points or less with them going 6-4 in those games. They also had two 3 game winning streaks, and a 4 game losing streak. Bottom line is they were an exciting team that was extremely inconsistent. The most obvious reason for the up and down play was the horrible offensive line, which will obviously be discussed further. Despite all of the inconsistency and the turmoil they faced last year (Incognito - Martin) They were 8-6 after week 15, winning their third straight game with this one being against the Patriots. They were set up perfect for a playoff birth. One win against the lowly bills or jets in the final 2 games and they were in the playoffs. I could only guess the hype the Dolphins would be receiving this year if they had made the playoffs last year…and god forbid won a playoff game. Which certainly could have happened considering they were 4-1 against AFC playoff teams last year.


2013 offseason Needs: (scale 1-10)

1.Offensive lineman: (10): Needed offensive line very bad. Signed Albert, Drafted James, brought in depth. Grade: A-

2. New offensive coordinator: (9): Mike Sherman was an idiot. Ask any Dolphins fan and they can practically predict what play is coming on any given situation. Please believe defensive coordinators could do the same. He’s out, and Bill Lazor is in. Lazor was the Eagles O-Coordinator last year and did big things with that offense and helped Nick Foles grow a lot…Grade: A-

3. Linebacking help: (6)..Didn’t do anything except move some players around. Hopefully a second year under the same D-coordinator will help these players be more comfortable. Also the emergence of Jelani Jenkins will determine a lot for this unit, I think…..Grade: D

4. Secondary help: (6)…Brought in Delmas, and Finnegan. Also have two cornerbacks who were drafted in the first 3 rounds two years ago. (Taylor and Davis) Both could be big time playmakers or both could be busts. Time will tell, I like what I see out of Taylor…and getting rid of Nolan Carrol can only help, hate that guy.….Grade: B+


2014 season:

Biggest Additions: Brandon Albert (LT), Louis Delmas (safety), Cortland Finnegan (CB), Jarvis Landry (WR-drafted), 3 new offensive lineman (James, Smith, Fox)

Biggest losses: Paul Solai (DE) Chris Clemons (safety), Pouncey injured for first 4 games. 


I really won’t waste peoples time with a super long write up. All I really want to talk about are 2 things. Ryan Tannehill and the offensive line. Needless to say I am a big Ryan Tannehill fan. He went from 12 touchdowns and 3300 yards his rookie year, to 24 Tds and 3900 yards his second year. I just cannot state enough how impressive this is with the offensive line he had. If you look at the game-log for him, he is constantly sacked 6-7 times a game. What kind of quarterback can be comfortable or get in a rhythm getting hit every other play? When he got time in the pocket, he excelled. Here’s an example…Tannehill was sacked 58 times last year (average of 3.6 times a game) During a 3 game stretch in which he was only sacked 7 times (The least amount he was sacked during any 3 game stretch) Tannehill went 73-113, 850 yards, 8TDs/2Ints…and better yet, Miami was 3-0 in those games. Bottom line, given a new offensive line, an offensive coordinator more suited to his style, and the weapons around him, I expect him to throw for 30 Tds this year. Offensive line: The offensive line was an absolute joke last year. Practice squad players. It was one of the most frustrating things I have ever seen in my line. Most NFL fans take for granted the fact that their favorite teams offensive line will be decent, and at worst just allow a few important sacks and that will be the end of it. I will never again make that mistake. Fins offensive line was so bad at times it was laughable. Tannehill would snap the ball drop back and get hit before you could count to 3. It wasn’t that bad all the time, but most of the time it was. It also really affected Lamar Miller. Dan Dierdorf (HOF offensive lineman) went off on a rant one game about how much harder it is to run block and know the schemes. A lot of Millers struggles last year were because of this. Miami went out and revamped the whole O-line. I read an article on ESPN that Brandon Alberts was the #1 biggest free agent signing mostly because Miami’s left tackles allowed around 2.9 QB pressures a game. Brandon Albert allows 4.0 per 100 pass attempts. That’s huge to me. So they brought in a pro bowl O-lineman, drafted an offensive lineman in the first round, and brought in 3-4 more experienced lineman. The new guys brought in, improved play of the line late in the year, plus good things I’m reading about Dallas Thomas make me believe in the O-line. What was once a glaring weakness is now at the very least an average offensive line. Pouncey Injury really sucks, there is no way around it but everything I read tells me he will be back week 6. (Miami has a bye week 5) Taking off the second best player of a unit will hurt any team, and this injury disappoints me…All in all it was a great off-season for the offensive line, but this was pretty obvious area that needed immediate attention.

Summary of team and what I think.

QB- Tannehill, Moore (B)
RB - Miller, Moreno, Daniel Thomas, (B)
WR - Wallace, Hartline, Landry, Gibson, Matthews, Binns (B)
TE - Clay, Sims, Lynch (B+)
Oline - Albert, Pouncey, James, Smith, Thomas, Fox (C+)


D-line: Wake, Starks, Odrick, Vernon, Earl Mitchell, Shelby, Jordan (A)
LB: Wheeler, Ellerbe, Misi, Jenkins (C-)
CB: Grimes, Finnegan, Taylor, Davis (B)
S: Reshad Jones and Louis Delmas  (B+)

P/K: Fields (best punter in the league), Sturgis (B+)


Prediction: I really don’t see too many weaknesses, still not a huge fan of the line backing core. They aren’t really good at coverage, but hopefully shuffling them around will help. So many times last year I thought that if Miami only had a good offensive line, they could take the next step out of mediocrity. This is definitely the most I expect out of a Dolphins team since the Ricky Williams era. The last 2+ years have definitely been building to this, and as a team this is a huge year. If they do not make the playoffs this year, Joe Philbin is 100% gone…Again I’ll say, Miami is being completely written off basically. I saw on Profootballtalk ranking they were ranking them like 30th. What an absolute joke. Worst case scenario for this team (barring massive injuries) is 6-10, 7-9...Best case scenario is 11-5, 10-6.…My prediction is 10-6. I really like the team they have and the fact they will be playing a Chip Kelly type offense that really fits this team to a T. Cannot be stressed enough how big of an improvement the offensive line should be. It was just awful last year.


Quick fantasy notes:

- I definitely think Lamar Miller puts up more points this year than Moreno and is a good pick later in your draft. Moreno will be used more as a 3rd down and short yardage back. Miller should definitely have around 30-40 receiving yards a game. Definitely think Miller has a solid year, I love his potential.

-Mike Wallace could be a late steal. So many opportunities last year that were not taken advantage of. Should have just as many if not more chances with this new offense.

- Tannehill. I laughed pretty hard when I saw Manziel was ranked ahead of Tannehill on yahoo fantasy football rankings. A guy who isn’t even the starter going to put up more points than a guy who threw 24 touchdowns last year and should improve this year. Cmmmmmon man. Tannehill will be a solid back-up/spot starter. 30 Tds is definite possibility.

- Clay. Definitely not a fluke, this guy can play. Was ranked 89th I believe on NFL top 100 players. This guy is a highlight reel who can run hard after the catch. I’m thinking 75-80 catches, close to 1000 yards and he is definitely Tannehills #1 go to option in the redzone.



Thought I would just get this out here now, and again this is obviously just my opinion. Take it for what its worth, just really pumped for NFL. Really think this is the year Fins take the next step. Now or never. Feel free to ask any questions, or rip on me for being a homer. Will be keeping records on everything Dolphins I bet this year. Just love talking about the Fins, and really feel I have a strong read on them…Well, as strong of a read as you can have on an inconsistent team.

this is great stuff.  I've done quite a few mocks on espn.  so far, no one has picked tannehill.  I've been scooping him as a back up or potential starter in the last round or two every mock. 

of all the players mentioned, moreno seems to go first.  i think it's a sucker's play.  miller has more upside.  clay usually goes 3-4 in tight ends.  about right, i'd say.

wallace has been going around 75-80 pick.  a great 7th round pick up imo.  what do you think about hartline?  he gets no action at all.

The last 2 years, Hartline has over 1,000 yards in each season, but I don't really give him any fantasy value with 5TDs...He is much more of a team receiver than a fantasy receiver. He will make tough catches, with no flash but consistent. From the mock drafts I saw, Benjamin, Tavon Austin and Kenny Stills are some of the last few picks. Much rather have one of these guys than Hartline. Without the touchdowns, I don't see much value.

Agree with most. Disagree on Moreno. There will be a rotation with Knowshown getting the most snaps. Miami's qb protection was so bad last year that they couldn't fix it with just improving the o-line. This is a big reason he was brought in. Same with drafting Lynch. After 2 years I just don't think Miller is anything more than a 3rd down back. 

A little harsh on Carrol. His last year was pretty solid. Will Davis will have to prove me wrong, because I think he will get abused on Sunday's. The loss of Soliai is going to hurt. Wheeler and Ellerbe were awful last season and now their plug is gone. Here is to hoping Misi excels as a mike. 

I'm also expecting big things out of Tannehill. Lots of room for growth. Part of him maturing is better manipulation of the pocket. With any kind of improvement along the offensive line we should see a large step up this year. The presnap reads, ball placement, eye manipulation are all there. Like the over 8 this year.

Agree with what you said. To me, Moreno's biggest asset is his blocking and short yardage play. Miami really doesn't have a short yardage back. They want Daniel Thomas to be, but Clay is more effective. It will be interesting to see how the snaps play out on sundays.

I really was not a fan of Carroll at all. He would get burnt all the time and then every 5 or 6 games make a sweet interception or good play. Not enough, glad he is gone. I also am not sold on Jimmy Wilson, but everything I read is saying he is improving. He is ranked as one of the highest nickel cornerbacks, somehow and he is probably my biggest question mark in their secondary.

Great read. Exceptional in depth stats, knowledge, etc. Agree with just about everything said. Cant stress enough how this has to be the year for us. Been way too long. I also see 10 -6 , 2 important additional stats that I have, 3-1 and 6-2. Meaning, we must go 3-1 at worst in our first 4 games that btw are winnable.

week 1 New england- you beat belichick with the element of surprise, nothing that hes seen before or has had time to study and/ or prepare. Think back to 2008 with the debut of the wildcat. I see a very vanilla preseason in terms of new oc bill lazors playcalling with all eyes on week 1 and staying healthy. Winnable grind out game nonetheless.

Week 2 at Buffalo. Traditionally struggle in our annual trip to western ny. However, this has the makings of a fins w. No cold weather, we catch a good but young buffalo team that will still be jelling, and revenge from that slop the last time we were there.

week 3 K.C - Another grind out type of game, LT Albert will definitely help out our D with knowledge of personnel, tendencies, etc. Also, bill lazor coached against KC last year in week 2, expect a favorable result for miami with kc expected to be down this year.

week 4 Oakland in london- a must win. Why? We cant afford a hiccup or a sloppy performance. Either way, winnable game to close out the month 3-1 at worst going into the bye week.

Finally, 6-2. We must at worst go 6-2 in our division games to be in contention for the wildcard, that is certainly within reach with the caliber of talent we have.

Fantasy note- I dont play, Ive always said fantasy football is for chicks that wear jerseys and men that are afraid to lay 11/10. However if I did, Tannenhill is poised for big numbers in this offense, that you could probably get late in most drafts.

This is a monster year for Miami and their fans. If they don't get it done this year, it is going to hit the fan in Miami. Coaches will be fired and Tannehill might even wrongfully lose his job.

I think Miami will be alright as long as they go 2-2 before the bye. 3-1 is ideal, and 4-0 is perfect, but as long as they are 2-2 or better at this point I will be relatively happy.

Their schedule is tough. Pats (2) GB, Det, Chicago and Denver..They will need to go no worse than 2-4 in these games to have a successful year. Those 6 games, and the division games will determine their season..You said Miami has to go 6-2 in division games, they only play 6 division games so I would take 4-2 in a heartbeat in division games.

We've talked in the past about how high both of us are on Tannehill. The loss of Sherman cannot be understated. Philbin is a much more competant coach then Wanne or Sporano. But I can't get over that he allowed the cadence issue to occur. 

My biggest concern is the o-line struggles contine stunting his growth.

The offensive line is a bigger concern to me because even if the linebackers don't play well, the D-line and secondary can kind of make up for it. Cover up the holes.

If the O-line struggles, nothing can be done to cover that up.

I was going to start a Oakland Raiders 2014 preview thread but then I realized I don't want to feel depressed today We share your same sentiments regarding O-line issues. We've had O-ine troubles for years and all we consistenly have been doing it seems is drafting defense and skill positions on offense. Love a lot of pieces the dolphins have individually. If they are able to now put it together and close games they will be able to do some damage. So many times last year I had them ATS and it was dead on the spread late and the opposite team would just crank out that last minute cover. Anyway, what's your outlook on the Raiders on next season. Thinking around the 6-10 mark

Yes, winning close games and closing games outs is huge..I can't describe the anger I felt last year when Miami was up 2 points on Buffalo, with 3 minutes left and the ball at mid-field...Tannehill gets ambushed, strip sack and Dolphins lose. Terrible.

Tannehill had some nice 4th quarter comebacks last year. Drove the length of field in final minutes to beat atlanta. Drove Miami 60 yards in final 1:30 to tie Bengals and win in overtime. Led Miami on a last minute drive down the field to tie the ravens converting a miraculous 4th down pass. (Sturgis missed tying FG) and led a nice 60 yard drive to score a TD with a minute left to beat New england week 15. All about taking that next step as a team, putting teams away and winning games.


My thought on the Raiders is that anything is possible in the NFL. The Dolphins went from 1-15 to 11-5 in 1 year, so any and everything can happen. I'm a huge Khalil Mack fan and think MJD has something left in the tank. McFadden staying healthy and how Schuab plays will obviously go along way to determining their season imo. I would be lying if I told you I didn't expect Miami to beat Oakland week 4, but the pieces seem to be there for the future. Oakland seems to be right now where Miami was when they drafted Tannehill. If everything goes really well they could be like 7-6 late in the year with playoffs a possibility. They seem to have a really tough schedule, and without a trust worthy QB (still wondering what happen to Schaub) I think 6-10 or right around there is the safest bet.

What I do like about Oakland is I saw their O-coordinator (or someone close to that) say the Raiders were going to run it, and then run it again. I am a fan of this philosophy because to me, there is nothing more frustrating then not being able to stop the run. Especially in the 2nd half, when your team is trailing..If they can play solid D, run control offense I think that is their best bet with the question mark at QB. I am excited to see Mack play though.

The point where you say they can go 2-4 no worse you lost me cause if they only  go 2-4 vs  Pats Det Chicago Greenbay and Denver they aren't relevant  and not any better than last year ..

Well I think they go 1-1 vs the pats, and most likely 1-3 or 2-2 vs GB/Det/Den/Chi. Obviously they COULD go 0-6 vs those teams, but when I say no way they go worse than 2-4, I am simply playing a high (pretty high) percentage in my mind.

You say if they go 2-4 vs these teams, they are no better than last year. Thats not really how the NFL works. Every win is hard earned. Dolphins beat the better teams on their schedule last year for the most part (Pats, Colts, Chargers, Bengals, Steelers) and lost to the more inferior teams (Bills, Bills, Jets, TB) Winning vs good teams doesn't really make you relevant. Finishing the season with a good record and making the playoffs and winning a game makes you relevant. Aslong as their record is 10-6 or better at years end, I don't care if they only beat bad teams and lose to good ones.

Heres another interesting stat. Before chitting the bed week 16,17. Miami went through a 7 games stretch where they went 5-2, with those 2 losses by a combined 7 points. They also beat 3 playoff teams during that span, and had a tough loss to Carolina where the Panthers scored the winning TD with :43 seconds left...Needless to say I think they would be getting all kinds of hype IF (if, I know) they could have just beaten the Bills or Jets.

Great write up as always w quality info.   Agree that dolphins r on the right track just respectfully disagree on tannehill.   I'm from texas and saw him lose too many winnable games at A&M.     I'll call it the it factor for lack of a better term

I saw a huge amount of growth from year 1 to year 2. I didn't follow him at all in college so I can't say anything really about his performance there..Except the fact that he was not a WR as most people claim. He was a QB, who moved to WR as a freshman because he was the most athletic of the young QBs. To me, this says a lot about how athletic he is. To most people, it says he wasn't good enough to play QB as a freshman.

I respect all opinions, even ones that don't agree with me because everything I say is just what I personally see and feel. Right or wrong I just try to be educated on the subject. However I truly, truly believe that I would be just as impressed with Ryan Tannehill if he was on another team and I knew as much about him as I know. There are so many little things he does, that go under the radar that I see that just leave me thinking this guy could one day be a top tier NFL QB. 

I also was very disappointing when they drafted him. I thought they reached for him, and was not sold on him at all. He certainly won me over with his toughness, athletic ability and potential.

pretty much dead solid perfect anaylsis just an average team that always starts off strong and when decmber comes around cant win vs subbie 500 teams like Tampa Bay last year then jets and bills after nbeating div top rival Pats??

I see what you are saying, but that is more the Dolphins of past falling apart in December which started in the mid 90's with Marino and continued up until about 2006. Miami would always start out the season 6-1, 6-2, and then end up being right around 9-7.

The Dolphins are actually 8-7 the last 3 years in December, and after that TB loss last year (november 11th) they went on to win 4 of their next 5 games.

One thing I have really learned is that Miami is much more valuable to bet on when they have no expectations. It is very hard for me to bet on the Dolphins when they are -3.5 or more. They simply don't play their best when they are expected to. I really hope that changes.

You say if they go 2-4 vs these teams, they are no better than last year. Thats not really how the NFL works. Every win is hard earned. Dolphins beat the better teams on their schedule last year for the most part (Pats, Colts, Chargers, Bengals, Steelers) and lost to the more inferior teams (Bills, Bills, Jets, TB) Winning vs good teams doesn't really make you relevant. Finishing the season with a good record and making the playoffs and winning a game makes you relevant. Aslong as their record is 10-6 or better at years end, I don't care if they only beat bad teams and lose to good ones.

Heres another interesting stat. Before chitting the bed week 16,17. Miami went through a 7 games stretch where they went 5-2, with those 2 losses by a combined 7 points. They also beat 3 playoff teams during that span, and had a tough loss to Carolina where the Panthers scored the winning TD with :43 seconds left...Needless to say I think they would be getting all kinds of hype IF (if, I know) they could have just beaten the Bills or Jets.

Those games your mentioning i don't see  Detriot and  Chicago as good teams The patriots could be down this year Miami should win that  first game at home and Denver could be all beat up with that tough schedule by the time they play Miami ,  Green Bay's not a very good team they just have the best QB 

like i said 2-4 here is not good

Fair enough. To me, its so hard in the NFL to go game by game for W/L before the season. So many different variables that I certainly don't grasp for other teams that I can kind of predict for Miami. Who would have thought going into last year that games vs Atlanta, and Houston would be easy, and games vs KC and Arizona would be tough?

I'm high on the NFC North which is why I consider those tough games. As far as schedule goes, Miami is definitely middle of the pack.
