I thought it was an [intentional grounding penalty] initially. I couldn't hear the officials—I thought it was a grounding," Tomlin explained after the game. "When I realized it wasn't ruled a grounding, I got information from them and made the call that we wanted to make. The distance was more important to us. If it wasn't grounding, we wanted to move them five yards back. They were potentially kicking into the wind, and we wanted to stop them and make the field goal a longer one.
Hindsight is 20/20. Easy to be a Friday morning quarterback now that we know the result.

So Tomlin originally thought it was grounding so he declined the penalty... Then he found it was not and he accepted the penalty.. OK.. WAIT... WAIT... If it was grounding as he thought why in hell would he decline that penalty its LOSS OF YARDS AND DOWN.. Makes him look even more clueless with this excuse.. Quit drinking the Mike juice.. NO BEN NO MIKE..

Not really Coach Mike changed his mind mid stream and backpedaled with a true Tomlin excuse only it made no sense and he makes a funny quip and we all move on... "Two dogs one bone"... "We do not live in our fears" ( his biggest lie).. Best call Mike has ever made ..." Get in there Ben".. Were talking about a HC who went a whole year without winning a challenge .. But hey cute quips... signed Steeler fan...

I agree that his in-game coaching leaves much to be desired. But the guy is a leader of men and he is just as impressive when he gets his guys to play over their heads and beat teams they have no business beating as he is disappointing when they lose to cellar dwellers.

You know I hear that a lot about Mike T like he has been saddled with the sisters of the poor talent wise... But lets not forget currently he has the highest paid defense in the NFL.. He inherited Ben and a load of talent on both sides of the ball and won 1 SB with them ... By the way NO BEN NO MIKE.. He beats the occasional better team (like any franchise does).... But at the end of the day he gets blown out in any playoff game vs better teams for a long time... Had a nice run turning the Steelers from SB winners into a long time also run organization.. Took over a SB winning franchise played out the clock on them and made them into a 8 to 10 win never going to win SB team again.. If you like mediocre then Mikes your man.. I pass.. IMO most overrated coach in the history of thee NFL.. Myself not looking for a leader of men who takes his troops into a Custards last stand scenario.. Give me a head coach who knows how to challenge a play correctly.. use basic TO knowledge.. hire a competent staff and win a FREAKING PLAYOFF game.. Keep your leader of men give me an NFL coach.. NO BEN NO MIKE....

Don’t get me wrong, the ability to be a leader is invaluable. What some of these coaches have to do to turn around a franchise is nothing short of a miracle. In Tomlin’s situation it’s keeping a winning mentality and record year after year with different guys. That being said…
You can throw all of those great leadership qualities right down the toilet when you can’t coach during the game. One poor decision by the coach can be the difference between “drinking wine and squashing grapes” as Tomlin would say. You simply cannot get these things wrong during the game. These leaders like Tomlin and Campbell do these idiotic things year after year. Don’t be surprised if Andy Reid’s crew is the one holding the trophy again at the end of the season.

@brn2loslive2win @brn2loslive2win They must have had a field day with Tomlins performance last night. He was awful. I lost a lot of positive thoughts i had about him last night. Why do fans know more than the coaches? is it the in game preassure?
I’m sure it’s not easy to make all the right calls all the time in game, although certain coaches seem to do it just fine. I’m sure the pressure and chaos of the game makes it more difficult than us guys on our couches or barstools. But, it simply is the difference in the outcome of a game or season many times.
I know that if I was a head coach I would have someone on my staff hired specifically to help out with critical in game decisions and nothing more. Their only job would be to think of these scenarios during the week and present them to the team during practice. And in the game they would do nothing but focus on when to use timeouts, to worry about clock management, to consider the outcome of accepting/declining penalties, and anything specific to in game strategy. These things should be determined and decided on within seconds during the game.

Tomlin one of those coaches where he’s brilliant at some things. Next world brilliant.
But other things…..he’s a buffoon. You would think Pitt could invest 100k in getting some nerd to invest in 23-24 games a year and stand near the coach to make calls like this. When to use timeouts. When to challenge. How to manage the clock etc etc

They tried that.. The year after he went a whole year without winning a challenge ownership MADE him put a guy in the box to help with challenge calls.. Mike T reply.. I will listen but at the end of the day I go with my gut.. He does go with his gut and still sucks at challenges.. Guy in box eliminated after one year.. It's Mike's world and if and when he leaves wish him well.. TY for your time and effort just please leave...

Sounds like you want Shanahan to be your next coach:) Brilliant mind, play caller, the whole package…except for, wait for it, game management at crucial times. So you can pick your poison Art. All these guys, even the best, are missing a screw here and there. The elixir is Mahomes or Ben or Brady. That’s the only fix to your Pittsburg problem.

'Judgment calls' ... like this one was ... are just that.
i.e. either choice is easily justifiable, depending on what a specific individual values, at a given point in time.
Zero point insulting someone unnecessarily, just because your own 'judgment' happens to put you on the other side of a particularly contentious decision.

From Tomlin:I thought it was an [intentional grounding penalty] initially. I couldn't hear the officials—I thought it was a grounding," Tomlin explained after the game. "When I realized it wasn't ruled a grounding, I got information from them and made the call that we wanted to make. The distance was more important to us. If it wasn't grounding, we wanted to move them five yards back. They were potentially kicking into the wind, and we wanted to stop them and make the field goal a longer one.Hindsight is 20/20. Easy to be a Friday morning quarterback now that we know the result.
Mike Tomlin is a fucking moron.

Tomlin deserves all the criticism with some of those in-game decisions but NO BEN NO MIKE? What about NO TOM NO BILL? You can argue Bill won more with Tom but the statement still holds true. Tomlin's consistency in wining should still count for something.
