Just curious how the writers thought Tavares deserves it more than Toews? I know Toews and Kane split the votes and they have eastern bias but still...
Toews: 47 points, +28, leads the league with with 56 takeaways, 2nd in faceoff % behind Bergeron, leader of his team and super clutch, the most complete player in the NHL.
Tavares: 47 points, - 2, all around game: close to non existent.
I just cant accept the argument that that Tavares is the "reason" the islanders made the playoffs, so just because a star is on a suckier team he gets better consideration? Trade Toews for Tavares and the islanders are a higher seed and a much better team. I just think that Toews is much more valuable to his team than Tavares, hence why Chicago had the best record in the league this season.

The NHL awards are a complete joke in this modern era so don't pay it any mind. It's pretty much on the same political level as the Academy Awards and it's been that way since Uncle Gary took office. The Islanders fan base and franchise needs pumping up and the Blackhawks' don't and that is all there is to that.
The lion and the tiger may be more powerful, but the wolf doesn't perform in the circus.

Isles wouldn't have made the playoffs without Tavares; Hawks would have made playoffs without Toews and probably still have finished top 3 because of their depth.
I agree that Toews would outshine Tavares if they played on the same team because of his overall game and talent, but these voters were swayed by how the Isles would have not made the playoffs without him.

The Islanders would be drafting first overall without Tavares. The Blackhawks would've finished in a playoff spot easily without Toews. Thats the difference.

Making the playoffs and only losing 7 games all season is a pretty huge difference. A couple of crap teams make the playoffs every season. If we are just going to look at where a team would be without a certain player then replace Tavares and the other two with Niemi because you take him off the Sharks and they are no where near the playoffs.
The Blackhawks would fall off farther than many people realize if they did not have Toews. Best all around hockey player in the world taking everything into account imo. Perfect offensive and defensive hockey skills. Incredible leader on and off the ice. Plays the game tough but right, and like a man. Never whines or dives like a sissy. Amazing team mate from all accounts of fellow players. There is nothing the guy does not do perfectly in the game of hockey. He makes many players on that team better than they actually are.
An absolute joke that this guy is not on the ballot, but then the NHL has been a joke of a league for a long time now. I love the game of hockey but I hate the NHL. Mario was so right when he called it a garage league so many years ago and it has only gotten so much worse since then. All these major leagues are run by complete douchebags though.

But seriously, they only care about winning the Cup.

how about the Jack Adams for best coach? it's the Seantors Paul MacLean, the Penguins Dan Bylsma and the Balckhawks Joel Quenneville.
"Walrus" will probably win with what he did with what he had to work with regular season BUT shouldn't Bluejackets coach Todd Richards be nominated for turning that crew around and almost making the playoffs?. both Danny B and Coach Q are great coaches BUT look what they have to work with. I can also make an argument for the Capitals Adam Oates for the way his team came on end of season.

Yes the hawks and pens are loaded with talent but both teams suffered injuries to key players throughout the course of the season but they still dominated, mainly because of chemistry and defense (defense esp with chicago), which are all coaching matters. I do agree that sens/cbj coaches deserve it more though.

If its most valuable to his team it's probably Tavares because they definitely wouldn't make playoffs without him. Or possibly Ovi
But toews has too much support with Kane, Hosea, sharp,... I think they can make playoffs with any one of those guys missing
Sid is offensively better but toews is much better defensively. Toews was picked the tournament mvp of the olympics where canada won goal, not crosby, same year he won the conn smythe and stanley cup. Crosby is a more entertaining player but i could argue all day that he is not more effective for a team than toews. Also read PBs post, theres a diff between a team with 5 losses and an 8th seed. The same stars were there last ysar but toews had a concussion and was not himself, hawks got knocked out in the 1st round (not saying that is thr only reason, obv hawks are a better team this year but def a factor)

The toews profile pic is a slight sign you may be biased!
I love toews. And I think he can carry a team on his back to the stanleycup as well as anyone. He has a lot of help. Sid has even more. They are so stacked its hard to imagine them not meeting in the final. And that will be a great head to head matchup to watch.
But I don't think it's out of line that he wasn't top 3

It is simple honestly. The top three candidates would be Paul MacLean with all the injuries he went through...he did an amazing job as a team.
Joel Quenneville - Set an NHL record with an absolute amazing run to start the season. He kept his team poised and focused...more difficult to do than you think. This team was on a mission. Damn Colorado Avalanche. None the less they won the President's Trophy.
Dan Byslma - Normally I wouldn't put him here. However, with injuries to Letang, Malkin, and Crosby leaves me no choice. Add the fact the Penguins finished the best record in the Eastern Conference as well.
My top three honorable mention:
Todd Richards - Did an absolute amazing job this year. The Blue Jackets finished with 55 points this year which is an amazing accomplishment. That is 10 points lower than what they had last season with 34 games to work with. Enough said.
Randy Carlyle - Team finished 13th in the Eastern Conference last season. This season finished fifth and are back in the playoffs. First time in the playoffs since 2003-2004.
Jack Capuano - Would have given it to Adam Oates here but I can't with the weak division the Capitals were in this year. First time in the playoffs since 2006-2007.

How about the Kings coach.... If Kings get to the finals, he deserves it hands down................................................ Not meaning to take anything away from some of the other great jobs done this shortened year............................................... But in getting that close to a repeat would especially deserve cudos....
What does that have to do with anything? We are talking regular season here.
