I encounter this problem frequently in what I do. Part of my job is trying to understand what is the best way to present my message in the hopes that 12 strangers see things my way, not my opponent's way. Right now Scal, because of how you present your message, your opponents have wide open holes to drive through to distract people by pointing to your methods of argument rather than the actual substance of your claims, which is really what is important, right?
I think Scal's goal is laudable. I think his means are completely 100% flawed.
The problem with your argument about comparison of the methodology of dissemination of my message and yours is that you work for the private sector. Your sole purpose is to represent a client. Once a client and monetary goals are involved, any resulting action for the sake of true justice is corrupted. You MUST represent your client in the best way possible to convince a judge or jury that your argument is the one that should be ruled in favor of.
I, on the other hand, have no clients to serve, nor do I receive any monetary gains for the stance I take. That is the single most important prerequisite when considering whether an argument can or should be believed. I serve a minority interest in general, but there is no single minority that can claim I represent them for a personal gain. As a matter of fact, the anonymity of this site even furthers the just purpose of the message. It simply can't be self-serving because there is no overarching achievement I am laying claim to other than deliverance of truth. (Some say I like to get a rise out of others and that is pure poppycock and not worth my time).
The vitriol that flows through my threads lies in the obstinateness of the members here who blindly refuse to recognize history with regard to the current socioeconomic condition blacks and the caucasian role, both present and historical, with regard to that condition. ABooksNightmare even had the gall to compare statistics I cited from as recent as 1998 to the era of slavery!
Now what historian, or public intellectual, or pundit of any worth would disregard Israel's recognition of statehood in 1949, or the centuries of Middle East conflict, or the the wars going back to antiquity when considering how to evaluate the legitimacy (or illegitimacy) of the Palestinians plight to gain statehood within the UN today?
The answer is of course, no one. It not only plays a role, it is the sole reason why their IS conflict.
But when it comes to race lines demarcated in America and its institutions, and the socioeconomic status of blacks in the US, there isn't a single social scientist, economist, or historian outside of the US who would disregard decades of redlining, housing discrimination, loan discrimination, de jour segregation, employment discrimination, lack of quality health care, flagrant civil rights violations, unjust arrest/prosecution/execution/mass incarceration, and the stigmatizing of the black race in general etc. etc. etc. by American caucasians throughout history. You couldn't find ONE.
But what do you see on covers? EXACTLY this. "Look ahead! You're always looking at the past. For the black race to better itself, you need to look AHEAD!" Why? Miseducation, misinformation, implicit bias, overt bigotry and lack of basic knowledge about the topic (given our schools both public and private want NO PART of upsetting the apple cart owned by dominant society).
Also, resentment plays a MAJOR role. Why? America's caucasian history is a sordid and gruesome one of exploitation, domination, subjugation, corruption, murder, and genocide all in the name of Western capitalism, white expansionism, and manifest destiny (which no doubt still reigns supreme today). There are of course, good things about American history but the genocide and exploitation that has occurred so commerce and technology could evolve, and alleged prosperity could be shared among a few, and the ability for us to surf the web on our cellphones and shop at Target, in no weigh outweighs those aforementioned atrocities.
As an example, I ask anyone here to stand up and proudly justify the "Indian Removal" and eventual Indian extermination after the Revolutionary War that occurred on the land you currently have rights to (you don't 'own' it); which was accomplished by (and is not limited to) the violation of DOZENS of treaties and the outright slaughter, starvation and diaspora of men, women and children of the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole etc. Nations; ALL in the name of Western capitalism and the domination and proliferation of the white race. Was that worth it? Speak to the Indian blood in the soil beneath your feet when you do. Could those treaties have been honored? Could we have peaceably existed with Indians to achieve or capitalist based goals? Now that that era has passed, and 'sovereign' Indian lands are some of impoverished in the US today, do the 'profits' of our economic model belong solely to the caucasians whose ancestors slaughtered Indian ancestors to set our current economic model into motion? Could those profits have existed otherwise?
These are questions people REFUSE to ask and answer because they know the answers would upset the current status quo and alter their standard of living.
Therefore, I KNOW I will be confronted with push-back, intolerance and insults when making a post. It is part of the process. And like a prize fighter, I willingly dish it back. When the bell is rung, whoever lays bleeding on the canvas is irrelevant. The message itself has never changed and is no less true than before the fight began. I was simply the one who confronted the issue, on this site anyway. I wasn't the first, nor will I be the last. But one thing is for certain, the people here, however frivolous you deem a gambling website, will be informed of there implicit/over personal prejudices as evidenced by their conduct here, as well as the prejudices of their living peers and ancestors, and the harm those collective prejudices have on millions within American society who they deem unlike themselves.
