The head of the National Transportation Safety Board shared an earnest plea with the public about sharing misinformation about the Ohio train derailment.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy told the public in a series of tweets on Thursday that the board was doing everything in its power to figure out what went wrong in East Palestine, Ohio, and how to avoid any future derailments.

 However, Homendy pointed out that regardless of whether the rule was in effect or not, the train traveling through East Palestine that derailed on Feb. 3 wouldn't have had the brakes.

My only point was that this train issue is not a political topic, when a FREE MARKET company screws up that is on the company, your side hates regulation and thinks the government has no place in the economy and especially to be involved with private companies. So when a public company craps on citizens, THEN it is blame the government time...sounds pretty stupid to me. 

Not sure how we swapped to the wall topic but the issues for me have been the cost, feasibility and especially the cost/benefit of the wall. Trump used the wall to anger you guys and it sort of worked but he never intended to build it and what was built was shoddy garbage and that was the low hanging fruit section, you know there are over a thousand miles needed...and yes he did say Mexico would pay and no he did not explain how it would be monitored and how much that would cost. If Trump ran his businesses the way he ran this wall scheme he would be where he was during the casino days, in a world of hurt. If he were to take his proposal to a bank for funding, with the lack of details and clarity and no cost forecast or budget, how far would he have got obtaining funding? The true cost of that stupid wall is in the multi TRILLIONS, its such a waste of time and accomplishes so little. It was a hairbrained scheme to make you hate illegals and vote Republican.

But man can they be an unleashed bunch of idiots if you let them. Case in point would be exposer limits on gases and toxins. They go before Congress and ask for several limits to be lowered. Congress reviews data, hears from all sides, and decides no on several requests. So OSHA says FU Congress we're going to use the "General Duty" clause and require a private institutes recommendations anyways.

The function of the HBD (Hot Bearing Detector) is to detect overheated bearings and provide audible real-time warnings to train crews," the report said.  

"Train 32N passed three HBD systems on its trip before the derailment," adding that at the third system, it recorded "the suspect bearing's temperature at 253°F above ambient." At that point the engineer began to slow and stop the train.

"After the train stopped, the crew observed fire and smoke and notified the Cleveland East dispatcher of a possible derailment. With dispatcher authorization, the crew applied handbrakes to the two railcars at the head of the train, uncoupled the head-end locomotives, and moved the locomotives about 1 mile from the uncoupled railcars," the NTSB wrote. "Responders arrived at the derailment site and began response efforts." 

There is another report that a private business security camera in Salem, Ohio, 20 miles from the derailment shows what looks like flames from the wheel bearing. Yet the HBD in that area did not detect it. Sounds like an HBD problem. Wonder what the rules are for calibration and maintenance of those are?

 I did not agree with the conservative bailout that the SOTUS did with Roe/Wade, that hockey puck pushing to the states was a total copout and only because of the conservative majority. The issue I have is that the mantra you and other conservatives make about having states make decisions is flawed, it is an altruistic cloud dream that states can make better decisions and it is why the SOTUS exists, that states are no better at making decisions and especially critical decisions which support a minority or an unpopular topic. Abortion is a political play toy both parties use to get the voters out and to secure their jobs it is a dividing topic that there is no good solution for and states cannot make the correct decision because of the fact it is a difficult one and there is no correct side and no decision that erases the harm done in both directions.

My political position is to support the rights of women in SOCIETY, that means what I feel best protects others, and that view might not be what I practice in my home but it is what I feel is best for society. In my home I am pro-life except for certain scenarios but that is because I can control the variables in which I make my own PERSONAL decision. So I support abortion rights for society and I have many positions like this where I decide what is best outside my house and family and inside my home and with my family I think and act differently.

On the topic of this thread, not sure anyone can act like this wasnt going to happen eventually...when employees know that the company is rolling the dice and that the risk is there, that is all I need to hear. NS needs to get a beat down the way that PGE has several times..they knowingly made decisions which added risk to harm because it was a financial decision to save money and when those decisions of saving money over safety and being conservative about business practices, well that is how it goes and they should be penalized heavily for doing so.

According to Federal railroad administration, average of almost 1700 detailments every year in the US during previous 20 years.  Nonsense for republicans to blame Biden administration for derailment caused by Norfolk southern.  For years, Obama and other democrats have proposed stronger safety regulations.  But republicans have a history of siding with industry in favor of weakening regulations.

 I dont think it is REPUB vs DEM issue it is a corporation vs government and that means lobby/special interests too. So you shouldnt blame just party to party because both parties get paid from corps and lobbyists...so neither is clean.

Overturning of Roe versus Wade is an affront to democracy.  In a failed democracy, unpopular minority overrules the will of the majority.  State referendums show most people disagree with supreme court decision.

The real issue is the Left media and politicians painted the decision as the end of abortion. Worked too, all the gullables went nuts. Justice's harassed, almost killed. 

And it is a thorny issue. Every case unique with it's own circumstances. Have to decide at what point does that unborn have a say, if any? I've seen enough nutty doctors on both sides of the spectrum that I don't trust their judgement. The people of each state have to decide what the rules should be. That's how our Constitution works!

Totally false statement. You act like the Supreme Court laid down the law and they did not. They make a decision that an earlier decision was not Constitutional. Many legal scholars agree.

No need to panic, the sky is not falling. Get off your arse and put what rules you would like on the ballot. If a majority of others agree you rules will be law. That is what democracy is. Several states have done so.

The Supreme Court left it up to The People to decide and only those who favor a dictatorship should be frightened and screaming.

The original Roe Wade came about because states get it WRONG due to personal biases, I doubt that even back then the justices wanted to decide what to do but since the states cant properly address womens rights then it ended up there. The original issue is no different than the issue today, the difference is that back then the court decided that due to the inabilities of the states that there had to be a federal decision due to the severity of the topic and the inabilities of local and state governments to do what is best for society.

My post above is what politicians and courts need to think when they make societal decisions, but as you and everyone knows that is not the case. People make choices based on what they think is best for society, their political and religious views and biases versus representing society as a whole and what does the most good and least harm for society...there is no altruism with the issue of abortion, but the decision made recently was 100% wrong for society IMO.

On Fox this week, while discussing the Ohio train derailment, Bret Baier noted that Trump and his Transportation Secretary, Elaine Chao, did not visit sites of derailments – including fatal ones, which East Palestine's was not.

 I was largely repeating my statements of post #17 and #20 that this thread is about the government response to a rail disaster not who is to blame for it happening. Then in post #38 it again goes off to who is to blame. Could have left out the word "hell", will do if there is a next time.

Historically, rare for any president or transportation secretary to visit a common train derailment.  Normally, thousands of rail accidents every year.   Government responses to East Palestine shouldn't be any different if more officials visit.  Extraordinary for multiple federal agencies to help such as EPA, NTSB, IMAT, CDC, HHS and transportation department. 

 On election campaign, Trump's visit is just a political stunt meant to present himself as a leader in a time of crisis.  But this ignores his questionable responses to disasters during his presidency.  For examples, Puerto Rico hurricane and California wildfires.
