As vast swaths of three continents bake under blistering temperatures
and the oceans heat to unprecedented levels, scientists from two global
climate authorities are reporting before July has even ended that this
month will be the planet’s hottest on record by far.

The heat in July has already been so extreme that it is
“virtually certain” this month will break records
“by a significant margin,” the European Union’s
Copernicus Climate Change Service and the
World Meteorological Organization said in a report published Thursday.

Scientists cannot conclude much looking at ice from a few years.  But obvious trends emerge over decades.  Satellite data confirms both sea ice extent and multi-year ice volume reducing in Arctic and Antarctic long term. Disturbing that old thick ice is disappearing so fast because it requires more heat to melt.

We have just lived through the hottest three-week-period
on record – and almost certainly in more than a 100,000 years.

The data used to track these records goes back to 1940,
but many scientists – including those at Copernicus – say
it’s almost certain that these temperatures are the warmest
the planet has seen in 120,000 years, given what we know
from millennia of climate data extracted from tree rings,
coral reefs and deep sea sediment cores.

“These are the hottest temperatures in human history!”
said Samantha Burgess, deputy director at Copernicus.
Human-caused climate change is the main driver
of this extraordinary heat, Burgess said.
“The global air temperature is directly proportional to the
concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.”

A recent study found that climate change played
an “absolutely overwhelming” role in the heat waves
in the US, China and southern Europe this summer.

The period from 750 BC - 800 AD saw warming up to 150 BC. Temperatures, however, did not get as warm as the Climatic Optimum. During the time of Roman Empire (150 BC - 300 AD) a cooling began that lasted until about 900 AD, although Global average temperature remained relatively warm until about 600 AD. From 600-900 AD (The "Dark Ages"), global average temperatures were significantly colder than today. At its height, the cooling caused the Nile River (829 AD) and the Black Sea (800-801 AD) to freeze.

The period 1100 - 1300 AD has been called either the Little Climatic Optimum or the Medieval Warm Period. It represents the warmest climate since the Climatic Optimum. 

During this period, the Vikings established settlements on Greenland and Iceland. The snow line in the Rocky Mountains was about 370 meters above current levels.

A period of cool and more extreme weather followed the Little Climatic Optimum. There are records of floods, great droughts and extreme seasonal climate fluctuations up to the 1400s. Horrendous floods devastated China in 1332 (reported to have killed several million people)

A great drought in the American southwest occurred between 1276 and 1299. During this period occurred the abandonment of settlements in the Southwest United States, including those in Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde. Tree ring analysis has identified a period of "no" rain between 1276 and 1299 in these areas.

From 1550 to 1850 AD global temperatures were at their coldest since the beginning of the Holocene. Scientists call this period the Little Ice Age.

During the period 1580 to 1600, the western United States experienced one of its longest and most severe droughts in the last 500 years. Cold weather in Iceland from 1753 and 1759 caused 25% of the population to die from crop failure and famine. Newspapers in New England were calling 1816 the year without a summer.

FOX NEWS SAYS; 

The "Dust Bowl" years of 1930-36 brought some of the hottest summers on record to the United States, especially across the Plains, Upper Midwest and Great Lake States. For the Upper Mississippi River Valley, the first few weeks of July 1936 provided the hottest temperatures of that period, including many all-time record highs. The string of hot, dry days was also deadly. Nationally, around 5000 deaths were associated with the heat wave.

I know this is a well meaning young lady, but pretending she is making some kind of difference is a joke. She hasn't changed a single mind with her aggressive form of activism. People who already supported her position love her. People who didn't agree with her position don't care what she says because she is after all just a pushy kid. This should have gone the the protesters in Hong Kong. They are actually risking something to try to make a difference in the world.

Climate change will never be taken seriously if the best spokesperson and expert is a child with no college degree or any scientific background at all. Has she even completed high school? What is Time thinking?

Thunberg, the 16 year old liberal icon. All she lacks is knowledge, education, and life experience. I guess she is a perfect fit...….

It is just another example of how they keep folks agitated and always have.

No facts or numbers will change their mind.

When this 'disaster' does not happen they will simply move on to the next 'disaster'. 

That humans cause global warming is the official position of over 19 academies of science and 200 leading scientific organizations around the world.  For examples, United nations IPCC, NASA and American meteorological society.  97% consensus is confirmed by multiple studies.  For examples, Lynas, Myers, Cook, Anderegg, Doran, Orestes and others.

Go back and look at where I pointed this out to you in the other thread.  Better research would help you out.

Climate change deniers haven't proven that 97% consensus is wrong.  Their weak arguments are unconvincing.  Scientists with the most expertise in climate science are also the most convinced about man-made global warming as scientific evidences are stronger now than years ago.
