Healthcare Vote Round 2

Well I lived long enough to know no private sector job is safe.  I've seen industries that I thought were bullet proof come crashing down and burn in flames ... cutting jobs by the thousands leaving people stranded in the dust.  This could happen to ANYBODY.  How much is cobra insurance these days after you get canned?  Exactly ... f*cking ridiculous.  Where and how do people get health insurance when they are at their hardest of times financially?  Planning on getting sick only when it's convenient for you financially is not reality.  I understand we are the sum of our experiences.  If you have never been in this situation i can see how it would be difficult to understand the struggles of many others.  Just remember this ... 1/3 of all Americans at one point or another will develop (or be born) an illness that will classify them as having a precondition.  And that's a conservative estimate.  It could be many years for you or it could be tomorrow.  And if you need to take a few weeks or months off for work to get well from a serious illness... pray you don't get canned at some point or another for whatever b.s. reason they chose to deliver you that pink slip.  My point is this ... it may not affect you now ... but it doesn't mean it won't affect you in the future.  There are many sick people now that need affordable health insurance without the restrictions of coverage ... it's literally life or death for these folks and the only thing that's saving them is the current gov't sponsored healthcare insurance.  Are there problems with obamacare?  Of course ... but the new bill passed today in the House of Representatives is out right inhumane.  Eliminating the sickest or the poorest is no improvement to any healthcare system in any country IMO humble opinion.

Cave0707, Trump and the GOP Congressmen have to feed their base with realizing those promises or platforms, to repeal and replace the ACA is one of them. The replace Bill will hurt some of their base too, medium or low income people with age of 50-64 regardless he/she is a GOP or Dem. Republicans also control the Senate, so chances are it's going to be a cake walk to repeal ACA as well. 

We'll have to pass the bill so that we can see what's in it.

Are you sure you're not jumping the gun? I could've swore I heard more than once that we will be able to buy insurance across state lines.

Medicaid might be different but for the rest that should make premiums more competitive.

You better pray we never get anything close to Universal Health Care. The government does almost nothing effectively.

again, no on has explained how healthcare is impossible (defined as, unable to exist) when every other wealthy nation has universal healthcare except saudi arabia.

also, i'm not sure our healthcare system is better when it gets more expensive by the day and a large percentage of our population can't afford to utilize it.

I don't know how you can say that with confidence. This is not a one phase operation. There are multiple phases and that has been part of the promise the whole time.

It's not simply a game of party over everything else.

Can we use the VA system to judge off of?

Government will almost certainly do a worse job than the private sector.

As I've said before, Insurance is a double edge sword. It spreads the cost among many, but it also allows the system to charge more for the goods and services.

The key to affordable Health care is somehow bringing the costs WAY down for almost everything.

I personally had a six mile ambulance ride when I wasn't insured that was billed for $1400. I was stable, it was from one small hospital to another larger one.

 I've also had an MRI on my hand that was billed at $1800. I understand that these machines are expensive, but $1800?

From what i'm hearing about this new plan is that while they can't /won't deny you for pre-existing conditions but they can increase your premium.Now for all of you who have healthcare provided by your employers at n/c what do you think will happen when these insurance companies increase the premiums to your employers for all those that have pre-existing conditions that are on the same plan as you? You think your company will absorb the increased cost or do you think it will be passed on to the employees through co pays, reduced other benefits or maybe total loss of employer paid healthcare. 

apparently, there is also a provision where an employee's benefits can be capped for various medical problems even under an employer insurance plan. 

We can summarize the winners and losers under this GOP Health Plan:

Actually, even if selling insurance across state lines does happen, it won't have the effect people thought it would, including me.  I did think it'd make for a more competitive market that'd help create more reasonable premiums, but months ago I read an article that discussed it in detail and basically it ends up being disproportionate because some healthcare providers will avoid certain areas for others that are more profitable.  They may put it into practice anyway and we'll see if that does end up being the case. 

US has the most inefficient and unaffordable healthcare system in the world because its mostly private sector industry is allowed to get away with it.

 According to theatlantic, healthcare costs so much less in other countries because of ways of reducing costs unavailable in the US.

Larger role by governments in eliminating high administrative costs from dealing with many insurance companies and  obtaining lower prices for drugs and services by negotiation and control.  Sick patients have less bargaining power than governments.

I don't have a problem with governments taking a very limited role in keeping prices down but once you give them the reigns it will go into a death spiral.

Canada is great for getting elective lasik but horrible for getting an MRI. I think the lasik surgery's are offered by private companies.

What happens if you are 66 years old and need a lung transplant? I'm sure there are scenarios that we would all find disturbing compared to our country.

The head of the largest insurer in the Mid-Atlantic region warned Thursday that the Affordable Care Act marketplaces were in the early stages of a death spiral, a statement that came as the company announced its request for massive, double-digit premium increases for next year.

Projecting that by year's end the company will have lost a total of $600 million since it started selling plans in the marketplaces four years ago, CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield is requesting a greater than 50 % rate increase in Maryland, a 35 % increase in northern Virginia and a 29 % increase in D.C.

Well at least is only 50%................

According to thebalance, one myth is that insurance costs are rising due to Obamacare.  Even without Obamacare, premiums would still increase.  According to Brookings institute, premiums would be higher without Obamacare.   According to non-partisan Congress budget office, the myth is that Obamacare is unsustainable.

Other countries are proud of their healthcare system with universal coverage.  Being on a waiting list is better than being uninsured.  Waiting time isn't that bad because sicker patients receive priority in treatment.  Besides, US has its share of waiting lists too.  World health organization rates quality of healthcare system in Canada and many countries ahead of the US.
