Trump does not understand politics is my opinion.
He is President and usually that is the party leadership position. But Trump was never accepted by the established GOP . and he won't work with the words . GOP gave him the wall funding but was going to place it in a appropriations bill to increase border security. Not good enough for the hacks in 1600 Pennsylvania ave. Where no one would dare vote against border security initiative he insists it must be a clean bill that is for the wall. Which will never rise to an actual vote and die in committee Luke millions of drafted bills have.
Same with health care everyone would be pleased to amend and approve again won't budge on the language. Could he please have someone remove bannon from that mans ear drum.

Trump should just start a go fund me page and whoever wants to pay for the wall can donate. Quality will be determined by amount of donations. 

He should out his money where his mouth is and make the first and largest donation to that go fund me. He doesn't care about America. He is, and has always been, self serving.

Tax increase on Mexican products coming into America amounts to a GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL WALL at little cost to the American taxpayers. 

Division of powers in US political system is designed to make bad policies harder to implement.  Various reasons why a wall is a bad idea.  US-Mexico border is already well defended and a wall won't improve defense much.  Cost would be much higher than original estimate.  Mexico won't pay for wall.  For years, illegal immigration has already declined according to department of homeland security.  No or little evidence that immigrants take jobs away from native-born Americans. 

A long government shutdown would cause great harm.  Everyone in government (especially Trump) would be blamed by the public.
