German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock said.

''We will not allow the brutality of the war to lead to
the death of lots of elderly people, children, teenagers
and families to die from hunger or cold over the
upcoming winter months due to the brutal tactics
of the Russian president,” Baerbock told reporters as
Russia continues its attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure
that have caused blackouts and cuts to water supplies.

Sweden commits $287 million more toward Ukrainian defense

Canada commits $500 million more in addition to continuing to lead in supplying winter supplies to help the Ukrainian people.

Germany, Poland, Great Britain, and Spain have all added greater commitments today.

Last week, the US committed another $400 million.

The Biden administration is considering a dramatic expansion in the training the US military provides to Ukrainian forces, including instructing as many as 2,500 Ukrainian soldiers a month at a US base in Germany, according to multiple US officials.

If adopted, the proposal would mark a significant increase not just in the number of Ukrainians the US trains but also in the type of training they receive. Since the start of the conflict in February, the US has trained only a few thousand Ukrainian soldiers, mostly in small groups, on specific weapons systems.

Europe agrees to cap the price of Russian oil at $60 a barrel

London CNN Business — 

The European Union has reached a consensus on the price at which to cap Russian oil just days before its ban on most imports comes into force.

“We still believe that the price cap will help limit Mr. Putin’s ability to profiteer off the oil market so that he can continue to fund a war machine that continues to kill innocent Ukrainians,” National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby told reporters.

“We think that the $60 per barrel is appropriate and
we think it will have that effect,” Kirby added.

The price cap is designed to be enforced by companies that provide shipping, insurance and other services for Russian oil. If a buyer has agreed to pay more than the cap, they would withhold those services.

The European Union’s embargo on Russian oil traveling by sea set to take effect on Monday.

Under the new program, the US would begin training much larger groups of Ukrainian soldiers in more sophisticated battlefield tactics, including how to coordinate infantry maneuvers with artillery support – “much more intense and comprehensive” training than Ukraine has been receiving in Poland or the UK, according to one source briefed on the proposal.

The proposal, which was made at the behest of Ukraine, is still under interagency review by the Biden administration.

Wholesale European gas prices have dropped almost 48%
just since mid-December to trade at €71 ($74) per megawatt
hour on Friday — roughly where they stood on February 15
last year, a little over a week before Moscow’s unprovoked
assault on its neighbor.
Prices are now nearly 80% below their all-time August high.

 In the United States, the cost of wholesale gas flowing
through the Henry Hub pipeline — which serves as the
country’s price benchmark — has dropped 50%,
back to around levels last seen in December 2021!!

It’s encouraging news for the millions of households and businesses across the continent who have struggled to pay their soaring energy bills.

Europe has rapidly learned to live without Russian gas after Moscow slashed its pipeline exports last year, following sanctions imposed by President Biden and European allies. The bloc has boosted imports from Norway and snapped up supplies of liquefied natural gas — a chilled, liquid form of gas that can be transported via sea tankers — mostly from the United States and Qatar.

Falling energy prices have helped bring down inflation. Across the 19 countries that share the euro currency, consumer price inflation dropped to 9.2% in December from 10.1% the month before.

Obviously very good news for war weary Europe who are otherwise struggling without Russian energy imports.  Ultimately though, this is going to severely cost Russia.  Europe will successfully wean themselves away from reliance on Russia over time, which will force Russia to lower prices.  Either way, the overall drop in export revenues will be crippling to the Russian economy.
