In reality, no NATO member has ever threatened to attack Russia. On the contrary, Russia border with NATO has always been peaceful. So NATO membership for Ukraine could have prevented war. But Russia manufactures nonsensical excuses to justify its illegal invasion.

It bears reminding once again that Putin chose to invade Ukraine and Crimea under O'bama and Biden presidencies. Why do you think that is ? 
For years, Putin prepared for a massive invasion and western sanctions. But he underestimated the willingness of NATO and Ukraine military to resist. He mis-perceived weaknesses as opportunity to invade. For examples, US withdrawal from Afghanistan, retirement of German Merkel and weakness of Zelensky. Probably Putin waited for Trump to win 2020 election so that he could pull US out of NATO to make invasion easier. Instead Trump lost and NATO become stronger. Now Putin hopes Trump wins 2024 election and that Russia outlast Ukraine in war.
