forces Sweden to rethink strategy
praised by many U.S. conservatives

STOCKHOLM —

Sweden once found cheerleaders among conservative commentators
and activists in the US for its light-touch approach to the coronavirus pandemic.

But as the numbers of deaths and infections surge, Sweden's government has been
forced to introduce much tougher regulations to prevent the virus from spreading.

Beginning Tuesday, the number of people who can gather in public will be reduced
to just 8 from 50.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven issued a stern warning:

"Tonight, in late November 2020, it is clear that it
will be some time before we can return to normal.
All the things you would like to do, but that are
not necessary: cancel, postpone," he added.

Sweden "was not prepared like other societies"
for the rapid spread of the disease.

They've been struggling with it. The difference is that now leadership is admitting that maybe they took the wrong course of action by allowing more "freedoms" than their Scandinavian counterparts. They've had far worse numbers than Denmark, Finland, ect... for quite some time now.

However now the numbers are surging to unacceptable levels.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Lofven used a rare Sunday night address
to warn of the growing threat the coronavirus poses, amid fears the strategy
used so far may not be enough to fight an increasingly deadly pandemic.

Sweden famously refused a lockdown, relying instead on voluntary measures.
But with a death rate considerably higher than elsewhere in the Nordic region,
and intensive care beds rapidly filling up, authorities in the country are now
recalibrating their approach.

In his Sunday speech, Lofven said “everyone must do more”
to fight the virus.
“The health and lives of people are still in danger,
and the danger is increasing,” he said.

The government is acknowledging that measures to date have been inadequate.

And consider this. We are talking about one of the generally healthiest populations in the world. Scandinavians are a very robust people. Sweden is a wealthy country with excellent healthcare. If they are struggling, we have no chance. If there's one thing American's should be doing during the pandemic, it is getting our collective health in order. Addressing our diets, or sedentary lifestyles. I say "our" figuratively because i'm healthier than shit.

that the populace were too lax in their "use your best judgement" approach with
increased social distancing, more frequent hand-washing, avoiding crowds and
optional mask use.
Left to their own devices it wasn't being well followed.
Humans everywhere are like that. Sometimes rules MUST be set and enforced
for the common good.
As a result the virus, hospitalizations and deaths are accelerating there.
I predict they will move to a mask-mandate soon...

Yes, but they've had a total of around 6,500 deaths. By comparison, Norway has had about 300. Numbers don't lie. You can attempt to twist them. Manipulate them. Even ignore them and audaciously say things like, "STFU you idiots." but the numbers don't lie. You've been touting Sweden for months and i've said, "Tox, Sweden is struggling. Their approach isn't working." Now there are people within there own government who have admitted enough. Hurl insults to your heart's desire but your argument doesn't have a leg to stand on.

NJ, NY, Conn, and MA are the worst performing states by far. 

And they all had strict lockdowns and required face masks. 

Numbers don’t lie. 

Sweden has the 23rd worst deaths per capita rate, while the US is #9 overall (Belgium is #1 with 1357 per 1 million pop.) However, NJ, NY, & Mass. would be numbers 1, 2 , & 3 in the world if they were countries.

Compare the deaths in Vermont (63 deaths) to the deaths in NY (33,804) 

Still no source showing ICU beds “rapidly filling up” in Sweden 

(if you look at the numbers it’s laughable that someone would make that claim) 

Imagine not saying anything about the Democrats that run the worst performing areas in the world and instead focusing on Sweden?

Deflect all you want. Not everyone that says something to disagree with gets their information from CNN. Look, I didn't start this thread so maybe you aren't referring to me. And i'm not coming from a standpoint of, "Look at Sweden, they've done so bad." All i'm saying is compared to other Nordic countries, they have done bad. And now their own government is admitting that maybe they made a mistake. You see, tox, that is the problem with man and our feeble monkey brains. "We want freedom! We don't need the government telling us what to do!" And then when you give us this freedom we stick our penises is inanimate objects and hurl poo at one another. Speed limits are the government telling people what to do. Our you going to dent that speed limits save lives? That laws against drinking and driving saves lives? I don't support all out lockdowns but requiring someone to wear a mask in a store, suggesting that maybe they don't travel, is not some huge infringement on human rights. And if believe it is, you've lived a pampered existence.

The population density of New York City is 2.5× that of Stockholm. Swedes are generally healthier and have access to better healthcare yet they are dying at an alarming rate when compared to other Scandinavian countries. New York is a shit show. That isn't to be denied but why is it that when someone brings up any other state, country, ect. people like you say, "...but ...but ...New York." You try to politicize everything, including a virus. What does New York have to do with Sweden?

Sweden has a higher covid death rate than California. Just let that sink in.

If an area is 2x more populated that doesn’t mean there will be 2x more deaths. 

For example NY is 2x more populated than NC and NY has 7x the amount of deaths. 

NY is 6x more populated than Vermont but NY has 533x the amount of deaths.
