Houston doctor tells TV station
he's fighting both COVID-19 AND stupidity

One Houston doctor didn't hold back when expressing his frustration and
annoyance toward the coronavirus spike in Texas.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joseph Varon, who works at the United Memorial
Medical Center in Houston, told KTRK-TV he's fighting two COVID-19 wars,
and one is especially hard to treat.

"...at the present time, I'm pretty much fighting two wars: a war against COVID
and a war against stupidity. And the problem is that the first one I have some
hope about winning. But the second one is becoming more and more difficult
to treat. Why do I say that? Because people are not listening. Whether it's
backed up by science or just plain old common sense, people are not listening
throughout the country," Varon told the TV station.

Varon oversees UMMC's COVID-19 unit, and said people choosing to completely
disobey the guidance put forth by health officials — you know, like wearing a
mask and social distancing — makes the fight that much harder.

Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday accused members of the "deep state" at the Food and Drug Administration, without providing evidence, of working to slow testing of COVID-19 vaccines until after the November presidential election.

In a Twitter post, Trump said the deep state "or whoever" at the FDA was making it very difficult for drug companies to enroll people in clinical trials to test vaccines and therapies for the novel coronavirus. 

The comment came after Reuters exclusively reported on Thursday that a top FDA official said he would resign if the Trump administration approved a vaccine before it was shown to be safe and effective.

“Over the past few days, our campus community has experienced a
quickly rising number of positive cases of COVID-19 in both on- and
off-campus housing,” NC State Chancellor Randy Woodson wrote.
“We hoped and strived to keep residence halls open and safe to best
serve our students. However, the rapid spread and increasing rate
of positive cases have made our current situation untenable.”

The university reported 325 positive cases of Covid-19 during the
period between August 20 and Aug. 26 out of a total of 3,105 tests
performed — a positivity rate of a little over 10%

who are “devastated” that they unwittingly infected Johnson’s family.
He and his family learned of their condition “two-and-a-half to three weeks ago.”

South Korea to stockpile
additional PPE for winter

South Korea is planning to stockpile 4 million sets of additional personal protective
equipment by December to prepare for a large scale spread of the coronavirus,
according to its Ministry of Health.

The government also plans to secure additional ECMO machines -- a specialized
heart-lung bypass machine used when the lungs cannot function themselves --
and ventilators, Health Ministry official Yoon Tae-ho said in a briefing Monday.

COVID-19 cases rising in 39 states

U.S. coronavirus cases surpassed 7.5 million on Wednesday with most states seeing
a rise in cases – nine months into the pandemic – and a startling nine states setting
ominous, seven-day records for infections.

A USA TODAY analysis of Johns Hopkins data through late Tuesday shows Alaska,
Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Utah and Wyoming
all set state records in the seven-day period. Wisconsin and Hawaii reported record
numbers of deaths in their states for a seven-day period.

39 states reporting rising cases and deaths

Covid-19 cases are rising
by more than 25 percent
in half of the country.
But testing isn't.

As many as 30 states and territories have seen Covid-19 cases increase more than 25%
in the last two weeks, according to an NBC News count of coronavirus cases in the country.

While President Trump and his accomplices have asserted that surges in cases can be
explained by increased testing, health experts say that a jump in confirmed cases is
usually caused by more people getting sick.

And those experts, who have long urged that testing is a critical tool in the fight against
the pandemic, say that the lack of aggressive and consistent testing has contributed
to the spread of the deadly trump-virus

Here's the dire situation emerging now in Europe:

Many European countries are reporting record rises in Covid-19 infections, which
overtake what they saw during their spring peaks,
as the second wave of the pandemic engulfs the continent.

Germany: recorded more than 11,000 new infections for the second day in a row,
which the head of the country’s disease and control agency described as "very serious."
The German government has also issued travel warnings.

Czech Republic: Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš announced a strict lockdown
and pleaded with people to stay home.

Sweden: “It’s time for partying in nightclubs to stop,” Prime Minister Stefan Lofven
said Thursday as he announced restrictions on nightclubs, limiting capacity to
50 people. The tightening of these restrictions comes as the country sees a spike
in coronavirus infections.

Ukraine: Ukraine reported 7,517 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, hitting a new daily
high since the start of the pandemic. It also registered 121 coronavirus-related deaths.

Poland: It reported 13,632 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, the country’s highest number
since the pandemic began. On Saturday, new restrictions come into force, which
includes the closure of restaurants except for takeaway and delivery, a five-person rule
for outdoor meetings, and restrictions on the movement of people over the age of 70.

Slovakia: Residents will not be allowed to leave their homes from Saturday
unless they have a negative coronavirus test or are carrying out an exempted activity.
Slovakia went into an official state of emergency on October 1 when its infection rates
started going up.
The country reported a record high number of new infections on Thursday.

Russia: The country reported 17,340 new cases of coronavirus on Friday,
around 1,000 cases more compared to the previous record daily increase.
