I am under the impression that the guy had a serious problem, and he wasn't in it for the money or the fun of it.  Think about it, if he was just in it for the money, he could have easily won some quick cash and just laid low until the next time he needed extra money.  Obviously he wasn't playing for fun, or he never would have gotten in so deep.

i'm not afraid of pit bulls one bit.  i could personally kill any pit bull 1-on-1 with my bare hands, no doubt in my mind.  why do you think humans are on top of the food chain?  Anyone that says it's not the dog it's the owner is 100% correct.  People are scared of pit bulls because what they are capable of physically, plain and simple.  If someone raises a chihuahua the wrong way then that will be one of the meanest dogs you have ever seen.  It's just that they are not capable of doing what a pit bull is.  So people aren't that afraid of chihuahuas.
