Your body will thrive without carbs, as it uses fat for fuel. This is not true as you will crash without carbs. Low carb diets are inferior to high carb diets when it comes to fueling for athletic performance. The tour the France winner consumed lots of carbs before and during races. Just because he may have consumed 400 grams of carbs a day and his competitors consumed 800 grams doesen't mean its a low carb diet. For fueling during races cyclists consume plenty of soft drinks, gels, fruit and special carbohydrate drinks which can restore their glycogen quickly. Cycling depletes glycogen and if you are low on glycogen you will slow down drastically.

You could be anywhere from 150-175 pounds and be fine. It depends on your body composition. The important thing is losing fat and gaining lean mass.

I run regularly and have finished a couple of marathons and several half-marathons. Now I run 3-4 times a week ranging anywhere from 5km (3.1 miles) up to 20km (12.4 miles).
Wall - If you are running 6 miles that is almost 10km so I think with 3-4 months of training you can get up to a half - marathon. Running longer distances requires plenty of mental toughness along with physical conditioning. The longer you run the more chance there is that something can go wrong such as feeling tired mentally, injuries, losing confidence, cramping, feeling weak, asking yourself why am I doing this ? If you increase your longest run by 1/2 mile every week then you will be able to build up with minimal risk of injury and keep focused on your long term goals. Running can be rough on the joints so make sure you increase the distance gradually to avoid injury. Running on grass and trails occasionally is good because they are more forgiving on the joints. Another tip to avoid injury is to decrease your stride length and increase your cadence. |

hey spitfire. I personally believe that eating a good diet with exercise is the best way to stay healthy. I dont take any vitamins or supplements.
Regarding fish oil, If your dietary omega 6:3 ratio is high then fish oils are a safe way to get omega 3's for our bodies. If for whatever reason you find that you can't consume a reasonable amount of omega 3 and keep your omega 6 intake low in your diet then you may benefit from a supplement. Ideally you want to have around a 1:1 omega 6 :: omega 3 dietary ratio but this is not easy to acheive. The SAD is about 20:1 ratio so many can benefit from fish oil even though absorption rates are not as high as claimed. High amounts of omega 6 cause inflammation in the body which lead to other problems. Fish oils help in decreasing inflammation in the body. You should look for 600 mg DHA/ 900 mg EPA ratio when buying a fish oil.
There is lots of evidence that multivitamins have minimal absorption rates and there is no good evidence that they can really benefit someone with a deficiency. If you take one everyday it can become expensive without much benefit. If you find out you are deficient in something then just alter your diet instead of wasting money on multivitamins. Hockey is my favourite sport to bet on and I was +$ again last season. I also bet on other sports like tennis and soccer. |

This study does not show a causal relationship between omega 3's and cancer, it only draws a link between the two, correlation does not equal causation. It was not double blinded and not controlled and this study did not look at the partcipants supplement use or diets, it looked only at blood levels of fatty acids. Just another one of those studies which the media and the public jump to conclusions without any sort of real scientific evidence.

I also owe you a thanks as it was in a previous posting, when talking about these cholesterol tests, that I brought this up with my doctor and he recognized that I was concerned about being on Statins and sent me to see a Lipid specialist. I had recently had an MRI and as I had no plaque build up and based on the fact that my bad cholesterol was only border line he took me off Lipitor, which I was quite grateful for. Good to see that you are off the statins.

Low cholesterol numbers do not always mean the person is healthy just as high numbers do not always mean the person isunhealthy. The total cholesterol number by itself is not too meaningful. The more important thing is the size of the particles and density of the particles which can be measured with a NMR or VAP test.

First thing is that you need to make sure that you are wearing the right shoe for your gait. Just go to a specialty running shop and they will fit you with the right shoe. Increase your weekly mileage by about 10-15 percent and run on softer surfaces. If running downhill is painful then try running some hill workouts, use a smaller stride when going up the hill. Strengthening your quads and stretching your calves and hamstrings will help prevent overpronation which contributes to runners knee. Avoid activities that involve knee bending until the pain goes away. Make sure to ice it after a run and when you are sitting or lying down keep it elevated by using a pillow. Anti-inflammatory medication such as advil can help but also have side effects so use discretion when using them.
