LIV Golf Jeddah picks and predictions
Dustin Johnson to win (+1,100)
We could see Dustin Johnson come out with a little extra fire this week after voicing his desire to have been on the Ryder Cup team. He's talked with the media multiple times over the past few weeks and discussed how he does not feel he got “snubbed", but that he knows he needed stronger finishes to make the decision tougher for captain Zach Johnson.
If there's any venue on the LIV Golf calendar where DJ could thrive with this added motivation, it's Royal Greens. He holds the course record here for both one round (61) and for 72 holes when he won the Saudi International in 2019.
DJ also went on to win that event once again in 2021. When LIV traveled to its founding country last season, Johnson shot a 68 or lower in all three rounds en route to a T5 finish.
He clearly loves this course and consistently plays well here, and I think he has the highest floor in the entire field. At 11/1, why not take a shot on him to join Talor Gooch and Cameron Smith as three-time LIV winners?
Pick: Dustin Johnson to win (+1,100 at bet365 — 0.5 units)
Brooks Koepka to win (+1,800)
Another guy who could become a three-time LIV winner this week is Brooks Koepka, who's the defending champion here. Koepka is coming off a tough Ryder Cup where Europe went wire-to-wire over Team U.S.A., so he could come into this week with a little extra fire in him after that performance.
Additionally, the level of competition will be much lower in this event than it was in Italy, which should also benefit Koepka.
His iron play has been sharp this season, ranking seventh on LIV in greens in regulation percentage. The putting has been much more volatile, but Koepka finished second in putting average in Chicago and could carry that strong play on the greens into Saudi Arabia.
Koepka fell one shot short of DJ’s course record in the opening round of last year’s event and remained under par in all three rounds. It’s tough to score here with the weather conditions, and if there's any golfer on LIV that benefits from a low-scoring tournament event, it's five-time major winner Brooks Koepka.
Pick: Brooks Koepka to win (+1,800 at bet365 — 0.5 units)
Royal Greens Golf & Country Club notes
Royal Greens Golf & Country Club in Saudi Arabia hosts LIV Golf in its 13th event of the season following last month’s tournament in Chicago. This course is hosting LIV Golf for the second time as Brooks Koepka won last season's tournament in what was his first win on this rival circuit.
A Par-70, 7,010-yard track (yardage subject to change) designed by European Golf Design, Royal Greens is situated right along the Red Sea. Its location is important because swirling winds blow in from the water, which rewards creative iron players who can utilize the geography to their advantage.
This also means that golfers can’t lose strokes on the greens, as that won’t be affected by the climate of this course.
LIV Golf Jeddah field and favorites
The cream has been rising to the top over the last couple of months, with Bryson DeChambeau and Cam Smith trading wins in the last four LIV events. That has them atop the board at better than 10/1 odds.
Dustin Johnson rounds out the Top 3 with similar odds in the 10/1 range, with Talor Gooch the best of the rest at +1,400. Gooch went on a run of three wins in five LIV starts earlier in the season and has remained a force with Top-7 finishes in two of his last three starts.
Brooks Koepka sits fifth on the board at 16/1 and the slight drop comes for good reason. Since the major championship season has ended, he's been just another guy with two T38s and a T24 in his last three LIV starts, not to mention a forgettable 1-1-1 record in three matches at the Ryder Cup.
Abraham Ancer, Patrick Reed, Mito Pereira, and Joaquin Niemann can all be had at better than 20/1 odds.
