The 2024 Belmont Stakes represents the last of three Triple Crown events this year, with some of the top three-year-old thoroughbreds in training tackling "The Test of the Champion."

The 156th renewal of the Belmont Stakes will be held at Saratoga Race Course at the distance of 1 1/4-miles rather than the traditional 1 1/2-miles due to track configuration. The race is scheduled for Saturday, June 8 at 6:41 p.m. ET, and we have the field and odds here now that post positions have been drawn.

Belmont Stakes field

Sierra Leone (9-5)

Sierra Leone was last seen getting denied the win in the 2024 Kentucky Derby by Mystik Dan by a nose. Tyler Gaffalione will try to make up the narrow margin on this Chad Brown runner that has the freshness edge on Saturday.

Mindframe (7-2)

Two starts, two really fast and convincing wins for this Todd Pletcher trainee, one of which came on Churchill's Derby undercard. Confidence must be brimming in this camp, and it's easy to see why.

Mystik Dan (5-1)

Mystik Dan will be the only horse to start in all three legs of the Triple Crown in 2024. He showed his Derby win was no fluke with a runner-up effort in the Preakness.

Seize the Grey (8-1)

Is Seize the Grey getting good at the perfect time, or did he just catch lightning in a bottle to scamper away in both the Pat Day Mile and the Preakness? D. Wayne Lukas seldom misses a chance to dance in these races and says this horse is thriving.

Resilience (10-1)

Resilience was somewhat dismissed in the Derby after drawing post 19 and earning what looked to be a soft score in the Wood Memorial, but he outran his odds to be sixth. He was second turning for home but was unable to sustain his six-wide bid. He should be able to save more ground here and has the freshness edge over several of these.

Antiquarian (12-1)

Antiquarian's misadventure in the Louisiana Derby was quickly forgotten as he gamely chased down The Wine Steward to win the Peter Pan Stakes one week after the Kentucky Derby last time out. Can he follow in the footsteps of Arcangelo and take the Belmont after prepping in the Peter Pan?

Honor Marie (12-1)

Honor Marie made up some late ground in the Derby, but getting shuffled back early all but cost him his chance at the win. A smoother journey could help immensely.

The Wine Steward (15-1)

The Wine Steward was a somewhat reluctant leader in a short field in the Peter Pan. After winning three straight to kick off his career, he's now placed second in three consecutive races.

Dornoch (15-1)

Unlike Mystik Dan, Dornoch couldn't find any racing room on the inside in the Derby and had a nightmarish trip en route to a 10th-place finish. However, he had no excuse for his fourth-place result in the Blue Grass Stakes two-back, where he was well-beaten by Sierra Leone.

Protective (20-1)

Protective is still a maiden yet is vying in his third straight stakes race. He was third in both the Wood and the Peter Pan earlier this year.

How horses qualify for the Belmont Stakes

Qualifying for the Belmont Stakes is a little different from making the grade for the previous two Triple Crown races but still requires a thoroughbred horse to be three years old and come in at a weight of 126 pounds for colts and 121 pounds for fillies.

Belmont Stakes prep races

Horses who finished Top 3 in either the Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes are given automatic spots in the Belmont, if they choose to run. Beyond that, every horse wishing to run must be Triple Crown nominated and pay a series of entry fees. As many as 14 horses can be in the Belmont Stakes field.

Triple Crown Horses

The Belmont Stakes is known as “The Test of the Champion” because it is the final leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, and typically the longest of the three events at 1 1/2 miles (12 furlongs). However, the 2024 season does not have a Triple Crown contender entering the Belmont, and the race will be run at 1 1/4-miles this year.

Types of Belmont Stakes horses

The Belmont Stakes is selective in which type of horses compete in one of the most historic events in North American horse racing, limiting the field to three-year-old thoroughbreds.

Thoroughbred

Thoroughbred horses are known for their long athletic builds and speed, making them ideal for racing. They’re sleeker and lighter than other breeds, which is ideal for the length of the Belmont Stakes.

Age of horses

The Belmont Stakes is limited to three-year-old horses. This age of horse is ideal for racing as they have yet to fully mature and have limited races on their resume, leaving an aura of mystery, but still post fast times and exciting finishes.
