Massachusetts recorded its third handle of more than $500 million in the first seven months of online legal sports betting with a strong September.

Sports betting in Massachusetts was up 62.6% from August with a handle of $512.2 million from mobile and retail wagering in September, the third-best in the state’s brief history, according to figures released by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission

The first full month of football in the Bay State’s history turned into massive numbers as Massachusetts eclipsed $3 billion in wagers for the year.

Online sports betting accounted for $499.7 million of the overall handle, with mobile sportsbook DraftKings claiming an all-time high of $290.1 million in wagers.

DraftKings saw its handle rise an astounding 79% month-over-month and it surpassed its previous high of $283.8 million set in April.

Massachusetts sportsbook operators garnered $51.04 million in gross gaming revenue, also the third best since online wagering began in March and a 117% jump from August to finish with a hold of 9.97%.

Mobile sportsbooks carried the state with a hold of 10.05% and brought in $50.2 million in gross gaming revenue.

The Bay State’s operators paid out $9.9 million, up from the previous month’s $4.5 million.

FanDuel records double-digit hold

DraftKings, which hauled in $28.2 million in revenue for September and recorded a 9.73% hold, had the most successful month, but it wasn’t alone.

FanDuel posted an 11.7% win rate on the second-best handle of $121.9 million to bring in $14.2 million in revenue.

BetMGM enjoyed a 33% handle increase to $33.5 million, good enough for third in Massachusetts in September, and its 11.03% hold was second highest. Caesars ($18.1 million) and Barstool ($13.9 million) fell shy of the $20 million handle mark.

Boston Encore Harbor bounces back

Boston Encore Harbor led the retail sportsbooks in handle with $6.2 million, and unlike last month, the brick-and-mortar operator finished in the black with gross revenue of over $242,000. Still, it was only a 3.89% win rate for the casino sportsbook.

Plainridge Casino brought in $4.6 million, but it was MGM Springfield that claimed the most revenue, despite finishing third with a handle of $1.6 million. An 18.29% hold led to over $289,000 in profit.
