Smith and Dotson Set to Shine with Brown Out

A.J. Brown is out with a hamstring injury. That is going to push DeVonta Smith and even Jahan Dotson to have bigger roles in the passing game. Dotson just joined the team on August 22 and played 32 snaps in Week 1 compared to 76 for Smith.

There is not much depth at the position as No. 3 Johnny Wilson is questionable with a hamstring injury after a DNP at Saturday's practice. WR Britain Covey is next on the depth chart while Parris Campbell is an option to be elevated from the practice squad.

There are plenty of intriguing trends to consider ahead of tonight's showdown between the Falcons and Eagles. Here are four I'm keeping an eye on:

  • The Falcons have hit the 2Q Game Total Over in four of their last five away games (+3.15 Units / 56% ROI).
  • The Eagles have hit the Team Total Over in eight of their last nine games at home (+6.75 Units / 66% ROI).
  • The Falcons have only hit the Game Total Over in seven of their last 20 games (-7.30 Units / -33% ROI).
  • Kirk Cousins is just 12-20 overall in primetime games. The four-time Pro Bowler lost to the Eagles in primetime last season, falling 34-28 in Week 2.

Why I'm Taking the Over on Kirk Cousins' Passing Yards Tonight

These are the sobering facts from Kirk Cousins in Week 1:

  • Zero play-action attempts
  • 96% of Atlanta's offensive snaps were out of the pistol
  • Cousins' 3.1 yards per dropback was the lowest dropback movement in his career

He is a 36-year-old quarterback coming off an Achilles injury and he saw very little work with a new offense prior to Week 1. The Falcons' offense was wildly predictable under new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, and being on the road in a hostile environment is NOT going to help.

Sportsbooks have adjusted, however, as Cousins' passing yards prop has dropped by 19 yards week-over-week to 224.5 yards tonight. Our Covers projections tool is forecasting 231.4 passing yards tonight, which is giving a little value to the Over. The possible negative game script as a 5.5-point underdog could really help this Over.

It could be another ugly performance, but this is a low passing total for a QB that could see some garbage time. However, I think this Over needs some garbage yards as Cousins did not pass the eye test in Week 1.

Falcons vs. Eagles All-Time Record

Birds of a feather don’t always flock together. Despite being in the NFL since 1966, the Falcons have faced the Eagles just 37 times, with Philly holding a 21-15-1 advantage in their head-to-head matchups. That includes a 3-1 record in the playoffs, where Philadelphia has truly asserted its dominance.

The Eagles have won four of their last five dustups with the Falcons including their last match, a lopsided 32-6 affair on September 12, 2021.

Troy Andersen Could Be in for Long Night

Atlanta Falcons linebacker Troy Andersen - USA Today Sports

The Falcons enter MNF down two members of their defense including starting linebacker Nate Landman and corner Antonio Hamilton Sr., who also missed Week 1.

The loss of Landman is significant as he played 37 snaps and graded positively on a defense that is not deep with talent.

Dallas Goedert might be able to take advantage of backup LB Troy Andersen who graded as one of the worst at his position in consecutive years. Goedert's receiving total at FanDuel is currently 41.5 yards and his reception total is 4.5, plus money to the Over.

Time to Fade the Public?

It's been a rough Week 2 for the betting public. Teams drawing 60% or more of picks went 3-8 ATS, according to our Covers Consensus tool. Teams drawing 60%+ are now 7-12 ATS this season. Teams drawing 65%+ are 2-4 ATS. Lots of love for the Eagles.

DISCLAIMER: This is far from sound science, as lines move and these are graded on closing spreads. You will see different bet counts at different books. With that said, this shows who educated bettors like and is another info source to consider before making your wager on Falcons vs. Eagles.

Barkley Poised to Delight Philly Faithful in Home Debut

Saquon Barkley turned back the clock in Week 1, looking every bit as explosive as he did back at Penn State.

The 27-year-old RB was very involved in the red zone, with his eight carries accounting for 100% of running back carries and 66.7% of all carries (with Jalen Hurts having four) and a 25% target share in the red zone.

He also accounted for 75% of the Eagles' touches inside the 10-yard line, with the lone non-Barkley play being a Hurts run for zero yards.

I fully expect him to score another major tonight, which is why I'm putting my money on a Saquon Barkley anytime touchdown (-185 at FanDuel).

Falcons vs. Eagles Line Movement Update

The Eagles opened as a 3.5-point favorite back in May at FanDuel. Following the Falcons' Week 1 loss to the Steelers, bettors started piling on the Eagles, driving that number as high as -6.5. However, after the A.J. Brown injury news, this spread slowly dropped to -5.5.

The total was 48.5 in May, dropped slowly after the Week 1 results, and then took Under money on the back of the Brown news which drove it down to 45.5 as of this afternoon.

Goedert Ready to Make the Most of Brown's Absence

A.J. Brown was ruled out for MNF with a hamstring injury that he tweaked at practice this week. That's going to free up some targets for the Eagles, who are expected to run DeVonta Smith and Jahan Dotson as the top receivers.

Brown had a 27% target share in Week 1 and 42% of the team's passing yards. Smith had a closing total of 59.5 receiving yards last week but has since ballooned to 70.5 - the same total Brown had against the Packers in Brazil.

If I'm targeting one Philadelphia pass-catcher, it's going to be TE Dallas Goedert. His receiving total has inflated just four yards, week-on-week. He saw an 18% target share last week which should increase tonight. Atlanta is also missing starting linebacker Nate Landman, which hurts even more as the team was already thin at the position.

Goedert projects for 44.5 yards on 4.89 receptions. His Over 4.5 receptions at +115 at FanDuel is also a great way to bet on Brown's absence.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Lincoln Field, Philadelphia - Wikimedia Commons

The Eagles' home opener is going to have perfect football weather tonight. There is a 0% chance of rain with temperatures at kickoff expected in the high-60s. There is also a slight 6-mph wind blowing end-to-end.

The Eagles played in colder temperatures in Brazil in Week 1, while the Falcons were indoors to start their season.

Jalen Hurts was 6-2 SU at home last year with a QB rating 25 points higher at home than on the road. He also completed 67% of his passes at the Linc compared to 63.8% on the road.

Kirk Cousins was 3-1 SU outdoors last year and had a 109.3 QB rating while traveling compared to a 100.0 rating indoors.

Robinson Ready to Run Wild

Kirk Cousins has been getting most of the headlines entering tonight's game, but I'm focusing on Atlanta running back Bijan Robinson for my best bet.

The Falcons mustered only 89 yards rushing vs. the Steelers in Week 1, handing off on 44% of their snaps. Robinson took the bulk of those carries, running 18 times for 68 yards. Atlanta has two capable ball carriers in Robinson and Tyler Allgeier, but it was Robinson who garnered 89% of snaps in the opener.

Head coach Raheem Morris told reporters that the plan against Pittsburgh was to run more (only 21 designed runs) but penalties and miscues put the Falcons behind the chains, forcing them to throw more than they liked and putting a lot of pressure on Cousins — who was the second-most pressured passer in Week 1.

Robinson’s 18 carries tied the third most attempts of his young career, and Week 2 projections have him forecasted for another busy game tonight. Rushing yard models for Robinson range from 69 yards to almost 80 yards on the ground, with all projections sitting north of his rushing yard Over/Under total of 64.5 yards.

My number comes out to 72 rushing yards, but I do think his output has a higher ceiling if Cousins is broken, as some believe. Read more analysis and check out my same-game parlay pick in my Falcons vs. Eagles predictions.
