Angels vs Yankees betting preview
Starting pitchers
Reid Detmers (2-2, 4.65 ERA): Detmers has been roughed up a bit since throwing a no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays on May 10. The lefty faced the Texas Rangers twice since that historic outing, and he has allowed eight earned runs in his last 9 2-3 innings of work. Detmers has also given up four homers over the last two games, and that’s not a great sign heading into this meeting with the Yankees.
Jameson Taillon (5-1, 2.49 ERA): Taillon is having his best season in a Yankees uniform, and he also happens to be coming off of his best outing of the year. The righty pitched eight shutout innings and struck out five batters in a 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday. He outdueled Jeffrey Springs in that start, which is impressive considering how good the lefty has been for Tampa Bay. Taillon will now look to build on what has been a great year thus far.

Angels vs Yankees picks and predictions
Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.
Moneyline analysis
Detmers threw a no-hitter earlier in the 2022 season, and the young lefty was once one of the top prospects for the Angels. Now, he’s a full-time member of the rotation but the results have been mediocre to this point.
Detmers just doesn’t miss a lot of bats, and that makes him a bad option to pitch against this Yankees lineup. New York has too many powerful hitters, and the team is likely going to do some damage if Detmers is just trying to pound the strike zone in this one. Pitching to contact isn’t a very effective style against some of the most dangerous offenses, and that’s why Detmers has run into trouble outside of his historic no-hitter.
Against lefties, the Yankees are third in the league in weighted runs created, fourth in slugging percentage, and first in isolated power. So, this is just a brutal match-up for Detmers, and it’s also a bad one for Los Angeles as a whole.
Taillon has just been locked in since the start of the season, but the righty did struggle in two starts against the Angels in 2021, as he gave up 11 earned runs in just 10 innings against Los Angeles.
Despite that, Taillon is still a bit more trustworthy than Detmers. He has also improved significantly since last season, as upping his cutter rate has really made him a different pitcher. His previous career-best strikeout-to-walk ratio was 5.0, but it’s up at 7.8 now.
Prediction: Yankees moneyline (-143 at BetMGM)
Over/Under analysis
Detmers has had three of his last four starts go Over the total, and all four of them have had at least nine runs scored — helped by his offense scoring 12 in his no-hitter against the Rays. Still, the lefty’s opponents have scored at least five runs in all but four of his 13 starts dating back to August 1, 2021.
Detmers is now in a position where he’ll likely give up a decent amount of runs against the Yankees, and it’s just hard to see the Over not hitting.
Taillon has had a great season for the Yankees, but some of these Angels hitters will be excited for this matchup. With that in mind, it wouldn’t be surprising if Taillon allows three or four runs over six innings. While that might be one of his worst starts of the year, the Yankees would be completely fine with that type of outing.
The Over is 7-3-1 in Los Angeles’ last 11 games as a road underdog and 5-2 in New York’s last seven games with a total between 7 and 8.5.
Prediction: Over 8.5 (-110 at Caesars)
Best bet
As previously mentioned, Detmers has allowed four homers over his last two starts, and the lefty just doesn’t have very impressive stuff. That means that he’s often giving hitters a good look at his pitches, and the Yankees have quite a few players that see the ball well from the right side of the plate.
With that in mind, don’t be surprised if guys like DJ LeMahieu or Gleyber Torres end up coming through with some big hits for New York in this one. LeMahieu is batting .375 against lefties on the year, and both players have on-base plus slugging percentages of at least 1.000 in 2022.
New York is also going to be playing at home in this game, and that’s a great thing against a guy like Detmers. With the short porch in right field, it won’t take much for the Yankees hitters to just guide the ball over the fence if Detmers is off his game.
Pick: Yankees team total Over 4.5 (-108 at Unibet)
