The Oakland Athletics take on the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, May 21, and the Angels are really in need of a victory here. Fortunately for Joe Maddon’s team, this game will be played at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, where the Angels have been a bit better this season.

Starting pitchers
James Kaprielian (1-0, 1.80 ERA): Kaprielian was a highly-regarded prospect in the Yankees organization, but he has had a hard time staying healthy. Now, the righty is finally in a big-league rotation, and he looked stellar in his only start of the year. Kaprielian started against the Red Sox on May 12, and he gave up just one earned run in five innings of work. He struck out six batters in that game, throwing 95 pitches, and the Athletics are hoping for a lot more of that moving forward.
Jose Quintana (0-3, 8.53 ERA): Quintana isn’t working deep enough into games right now, but he does appear to be turning things around a bit. Los Angeles has won in each of Quintana’s last two starts, and he allowed just four earned runs over 8.1 total innings of work in those games. Quintana’s stuff has been tough to hit as well, as evidenced by his 13 strikeouts over the last two outings. If he can start to get into the sixth inning a bit more often, it’d be huge for the Angels.

Moneyline pick
It would be a wonderful story if Kaprielian really figures it out in Oakland this season, and a bad start here certainly wouldn’t mean that a nice year is out of the question. However, the righty isn’t going to be as good as he was against the Red Sox in each of his appearances this year, and there will be some growing pains along the way. This seems like a game that could be trouble for him, especially considering he’ll be facing Shohei Ohtani. The two-way star has homered in four of his last six games, and he has just been a monster against right-handed starters this year. Against righties, Ohtani is batting .303 with 10 homers and 25 RBI.
Quintana could turn in a surprisingly good performance in this one. The last time the lefty faced the Athletics, he pitched seven innings of one-run ball and struck out seven. Sure, that start was in 2019, but the reality is that nobody in this A’s lineup has really given him trouble in the past. The only one that has been a bit of a thorn in his side is Jed Lowrie, who is 5 for 10 with a double and two RBI in their head-to-head history.
PREDICTION: Angels ML -102
Over/Under pick
The Over has hit in each of Oakland’s last five games, with the average number of runs scored in those games being 10.8 per game. It’s been a bit of a mixed bag as to who is doing most of the damage in those games, but the Athletics are holding their own at the plate. It’s not just their opponents doing the heavy lifting, despite the fact that Oakland has lost three of its previous five.
The Angels have also found themselves in some high-scoring games as of late, and they’re in the top half of the league in runs scored on the season. Even without Mike Trout in the lineup, Los Angeles has what it takes to put up its fair share of runs — especially against a pitcher as inexperienced as Kaprielian.
For what it’s worth, the Over has also hit in 16 of the 22 games that the Angels have played at home with a total of 9 to 9.5 since the start of last season.
PREDICTION: Over 9.5 (-110)
