Starting pitchers

Luis Garcia (8-6, 3.29 ERA): Garcia struck out eight batters in six shutout innings against the Minnesota Twins in his last trip to the mound, so he’ll be looking to build off that in this meeting with the Angels. The righty has actually had trouble against Los Angeles this season, as he is 0-1 with a 5.23 ERA in three games against the team this year. Garcia is also just 3-3 with a 5.08 ERA on the road in 2021.

Jaime Barria (2-0, 4.21 ERA): Barria had to face the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 7, but the righty didn’t back down from that challenge. The Angels weren’t able to get the job done in the end of that one, but Barria pitched six innings and gave up only three runs in that outing. It was his third quality start in a row, meaning the 25-year-old has been giving the Angels a chance in his starts.

Moneyline pick

When Garcia is struggling, the righty is normally walking batters and then overcorrecting by throwing one to a bad spot and giving up homers. There was none of that in his last start, as he struck out eight and gave up only two hits in a six-inning shutout against the Twins. Garcia didn’t walk any batters in that game, and his good starts tend to come in bunches. Don’t be surprised if the righty goes another six or seven innings and gives up three or fewer runs.

As for Houston’s offense, you pretty much know what you’re going to get. The Astros are second in baseball in batting average against righties, while also being third in on-base percentage, fifth in slugging percentage and fourth in OPS. Barria has had a good year for Los Angeles thus far, but he doesn’t have the type of stuff to keep this Astros offense down. It’d be surprising if they didn’t score four or five here.

PREDICTION: Astros ML (-188)

Over/Under pick

Garcia and Barria aren’t aces for their teams or anything, but 9.5 still seems a little high with these two on the mound. Only three of Garcia’s last 12 starts would have gone Over a total like this one, and all three of Barria’s starts this season would have gone Under this mark.

Will either of these guys come out and dominate their opponent in this start? Probably not. But they’re also not likely to make any costly mistakes, making the Under look like a pretty solid play tonight.

PREDICTION: Under 9.5 (-108)
