Blue Jays vs Yankees Picks and Predictions: Berrios Neutralizes Bronx Bombers

The Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees are known for their big bats but it has been pitchers making the most noise, with the teams trading shutouts in the first two games of this four-game set in the Bronx.

It could be more of the same when staff aces Gerrit Cole and Jose Berrios take the mound in Game 3. Will the Under continue to be a sneaky good bet when these AL East rivals meet, or with the bats finally pop?

Blue Jays vs Yankees betting preview

Starting pitchers

Jose Berrios (2021: 12-9 3.52 ERA): Berrios is coming off an Opening Day to forget. The right-hander surrendered four runs on three hits and two walks, while only recording one out against the Rangers in his first start of the season. He’ll look to bounce back against a Yankees team that he put up some solid numbers against last season.

Gerrit Cole (2021: 16-8, 3.23 ERA): Cole’s Opening Day wasn’t much better. After blaming the ceremonial delay, he lasted just four innings while giving up three runs on four hits. Not the game you’d expect from the betting favorite to win the American League Cy Young Award. But he’s the favorite for a reason.

Blue Jays vs Yankees picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The Blue Jays shut out the Yankees 3-0 in the opener of this four-game set but the Yanks returned serve, shutting out the Jays 4-0 last night. Now, the AL East rivals each send their best arms to the bump.

For the Jays, that’s Jose Berrios, who is probably looking to erase his performance on Opening Day from his memory completely after not being able to escape the first inning.

Berrios was solid as a member of the Jays last season, pitching to a 3.28 FIP and a 1.09 WHIP over 12 starts. That includes two solid outings against the Yankees. Both were in September in what were must-win games. Berrios pitched 6 2-3 innings on Sept. 9, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out eight. He followed that up by allowing three runs on four hits while striking out seven over six innings on Sept. 29.

For the Yankees, Gerrit Cole is looking to put that Opening Day behind him as well. While he had some struggles last season (by his standards), he still led the AL in wins and strikeout-to-walk ratio while finishing second in Cy Young voting.

Against the Jays, it was a tale of two halves. In three starts against Toronto prior to July, Cole posted a 2.33 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP. But in two September starts versus the Jays, he allowed a combined seven earned runs on 14 hits over 9.2 innings.

So, what to make of this game?

The Blue Jays have done a better job of handling right-handers than the Yankees have early on, with Toronto posting a .792 OPS compared to New York’s .683.

One team is getting +150 money. This isn’t a confident play but let’s lean towards the underdog here.

Prediction: Blue Jays ML (+150 at bet365)

Over/Under analysis

While we’re not confident about the side, the total may be the best thing to target in this matchup. Early money has come in on the Under, moving the 8.5 to 8, but there are still some 8.5s out there to be had and that’s where we’re leaning tonight.

For starters, these AL East rivals continue to play tight games at Yankee Stadium, with the Under cashing in 10 of the last 12 meetings there. Games 1 and 2 of this series were no different, seeing a total of seven runs scored.

Toronto’s bats have pretty much gone silent since halfway through its game Sunday against the Rangers. In fact, the Jays are hitting just .214 this series with 20 strikeouts. Conversely, the Yanks are hitting just .193 while getting punched out 14 times.

On top of that, both bullpens have been stellar so far this season and in this series. Bet on another low-scoring game in the Bronx.

Prediction: Under 8.5 (-120 at bet365)

Best bet

All that said, I think we see much better versions of both Berrios and Cole tonight. Despite the early struggles, they’ve both proven they can pitch well in this matchup.

The Jays and Yanks have both cooled off at the dish this series. While both bullpens have been solid, we’re still eliminating that variable in this handicap and betting the Under on the five-inning total.

Pick: First five innings Under 4.5 (-128 at FanDuel)
