It’s rivalry time. The Los Angeles Dodgers look to shake off a series loss to the San Diego Padres as they head to the Bay Area for a three-game series with the San Francisco Giants.
According to MLB odds, the Dodgers are -180 on the moneyline while the total resides at 7.5.

My analysis
The Los Angeles Dodgers must be pleased with Japanese import Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s performance lately. He’s been lights out since a disappointing debut, sporting a 1.76 ERA in his last seven starts with 45 strikeouts compared to seven walks.
Yamamoto had one of his best starts last time out, going eighth strong innings against the Miami Marlins while yielding two earned runs in an 8-2 win. He’s managed to find success both with his heater and off-speed pitches and is even feeling comfortable enough on the mound to debut a new sinker in his last start.
Now, the 25-year-old hurler faces a San Francisco Giants lineup that injuries have decimated. Absent are Jorge Soler, Michael Conforto, Austin Slater, Nick Ahmed, and Jung Hoo Lee. Catcher Patrick Bailey was sick on Sunday and his status is unclear today. This looks like a mismatch in favor of Yamamoto.
San Francisco counters with Jordan Hicks, a career reliever who has transitioned beautifully to the rotation. The sinker-baller has a 2.30 ERA, 3.49 xERA, and 3.14 FIP across eight starts. He’s taken a few ticks off his fastball but has compensated with an 88th percentile groundball rate (55.4%).
The Dodgers have been in a bit of a funk at the plate lately, averaging 2.3 runs in their last four games. They’ve been mediocre against right-handed pitching across the last 15 days with a 101 wRC+ and a wOBA of .307. Each of their last four games has gone Under the total.
I’ll bet on another Under coming through on Monday in a game featuring two quality starting pitchers. Yamamoto is in fantastic form and faces an extremely thin Giants lineup due to bad injury luck. Hicks has been a steady member of the rotation and the Dodgers lineup is in the midst of a mini cold spell.

I’m not sounding the alarm bells for the Dodgers after they lost two of three against the Padres this weekend considering they had won their last five series up until that point and were on a roll before taking a step back in San Diego. LA has won eight of the last 10 meetings with San Francisco and I see no reason for that to stop.
Yamamoto is averaging 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings with an impressive 27.8% K-rate. I’m looking for him to carve up this shorthanded Giants lineup with an 87 wRC+, .286 wOBA, and 22.9% K-rate against right-handers across the last 15 days.
