Starting pitchers

Anthony DeSclafani (11-5, 3.26 ERA): DeSclafani had to leave in the second inning of his start against the New York Mets on August 18. The righty was experiencing some discomfort in his ankle, but he is ready to go in this one and should be somewhat rested after only throwing 29 pitches against New York. DeSclafani has been solid for the Giants all year, and he also happens to be 5-3 with a 2.80 ERA on the road this season. His ERA at home is 4.04, so he’ll be looking forward to the change of scenery.

Ian Anderson (5-5, 3.56 ERA): Anderson was one of the top prospects in the Braves organization, and he has been excellent in his first full year as a member of this rotation. The righty has turned in quality starts in eight of his 18 outings, but he has also had a few others come close to earning that distinction. The only issue here is that the 23-year-old is just returning from a shoulder injury, so there’s no telling what we’re going to see from him.

Moneyline pick

The Giants haven’t had a chance to face Anderson yet, but they should be looking forward to getting out there against him. The 23-year-old was struggling with his control before a stint on the IL, as he walked 10 batters in his three most recent trips to the hill. Anderson is coming off a long time without pitching at this level, and his rehab work won’t be able to prepare him for the nerves of pitching in a real game. If there’s any rust at all, the righty could struggle — especially early. He also has a 4.03 ERA in home games this year, which is worse than his home record. His day/night splits aren’t favorable either, as he is 0-3 with a 4.60 ERA in his afternoon appearances this year.

Whereas Anderson has struggled at home, DeSclafani has done most of his best work when pitching on the road this season. The righty should be able to give the Giants a good chance to win in this game. He just needs to be extra focused when facing Joc Pederson and Freddie Freeman, as both of them have given him a lot of trouble in the past.

Overall, the value on the Giants is there in a game like this. Brandon Crawford is a player that could push San Francisco beyond the finish line, as he is batting .305 with 14 homers and 49 RBIs against righties this year. He’s a different guy when facing right-handed pitchers, and he should make Anderson nervous today.

PREDICTION: Giants ML (+122)

Over/Under pick

These teams combined to score 11 runs in the first game in this series, but the Giants were the only team to score in their 5-0 win on Saturday. Look for the bats to wake back up in this game, as both of these pitchers have some question marks coming into this. DeSclafani was feeling some pain in his last start against the Mets, and Anderson is just coming back from a lengthy layoff with shoulder pain. If DeSclafani isn’t at full strength, the Braves will score some runs in this one. The Giants are also likely to capitalize on any rust from Anderson, who might be a little shaky out of the gates.

PREDICTION: Over 9.0 (-120)
