Giants vs Dodgers Picks and Predictions: Buehl for the Fire

Walker Buehler has been as consistent as ever for the Dodgers. He's showing arguably the best command of his career, resulting in his walks being way down and a 0.89 WHIP.

The early-season panic around the Los Angeles Dodgers was overblown, as the defending World Series Champs are arguably the hottest team in baseball having won 13 of their last 15 games overall.

The Dodgers will look to stay hot as they continue their series with National League West rivals, the San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers have won all four meetings with the Giants this season, can they make it five in a row?

Giants vs Dodgers betting preview

Starting pitchers

Anthony DeSclafani (4-2, 3.54 ERA): DeSclafani has had a career resurgence by The Bay becoming one of the Giants' most reliable arms in the starting rotation. The right-hander hadn’t allowed more than three earned runs and recorded five quality starts in his first nine appearances. Then he faced the Dodgers. L.A. tuned him up for 10 runs on nine hits in just 2 2-3 innings back on May 23.

Walker Buehler (3-0, 2.78 ERA): Buehler might be having the best season of what has already been a sparkling start to a career. The right-hander is showing arguably the best command of his career, resulting in his walks being way down and a 0.89 WHIP.

Runline pick

The Dodgers struck first in this NL West showdown, taking a 4-3 decision over the Giants. It was the Dodgers' 13th in win their last 15 games and they now sit a half-game behind the San Diego Padres for first in the division, while the Giants are now 1.5 games back after spending most of the early part of the season in first place.

But the question in this matchup is can DeSclafani end the Giants’ four-game skid against the Dodgers this season? Well, while the right-hander was rolling along early, until he ran into a wall in the form of the Dodgers lineup.

While you shouldn’t expect DeSclafani to be as bad this time around, a return to the mean for a guy who is a career .500 pitcher with a 4.23 ERA is to be expected. The right-hander also has a 6.75 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in seven career starts against the Dodgers.

It doesn’t help that L.A. is raking at the dish right now, averaging 5.6 runs per game over this 15-game stretch, and ranking second in batting average, and OPS against right-handers this season.

The Dodgers counter with Buehler, who limited the Giants' lineup to one run on six hits over seven innings back on May 22, and is holding opponents to a .185 batting average at Dodger Stadium. L.A. is a good bet to win this one by multiple runs.

PREDICTION: Dodgers -1.5 (+110)

Over/Under pick

The total for this NL West matchup falls in line with the previous four meetings this season, all falling between 7.0 and 7.5 with the O/U going 2-2. So, which side of the total will this game fall on?

While we’ve laid out why we think the Dodgers hitters can be successful in this one we’ll still need the Giants to plate some runs to send this one Over. And they’ll have a chance too.

Even though Buehler is having a solid season he has allowed eight home runs and this Giants team is a scrappy bunch that hits for power, slugging the fourth-most home runs per game this season.

If the Giants can hit a long ball and plate a couple of runs, the Dodgers’ offense should be able to do the rest to carry this one Over a relatively low number.

PREDICTION: Over 7.5 (-110)
