We have the second matchup of this three-game NL West series with the Los Angeles Dodgers hosting the San Francisco Giants. This is the 15th meeting between these clubs this season, with the Dodgers winning 10 of the first 14 matchups.

Will Los Angeles win once again, or can the Giants pull off the win as a large road underdog?

Giants vs Dodgers picks and predictions

Left-hander Tyler Anderson is taking the mound for the Dodgers in this contest and should be an excellent candidate to back in the strikeout department. Through 25 appearances this season, Anderson is 13-3 with a 2.68 ERA and 1.02 WHIP.

Anderson enters this game in particularly great form, with a 1.95 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over his last five starts. We should not expect regression from him, as he possesses a .279 xwOBA, .226 xBA, and .356 xSLG this year.

We are getting a generous number in the strikeout department because Anderson typically is not a punchout type of pitcher, however, this matchup is a great one. Over his last six starts against the Giants, he is 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA and 1.17 WHIP.

Across those six outings, Anderson has collected at least five strikeouts five times. This trend should continue tonight.

Since August 1, San Francisco ranks just 23rd in the league in K% when facing left-handed pitchers. Looking at the Giants’ projected starting lineup for tonight, they only have two hitters who have a season K% south of 21% (Wilmer Flores and Thairo Estrada).

We saw this in full effect last night, when left-hander Andrew Heaney collected eight strikeouts in just 5 1-3 innings against San Francisco. Anderson typically relies on four pitches, with the most strikeout success stemming from his changeup that is set up by his 4-seam fastball.

My best bet: Tyler Anderson Over 4.5 strikeouts (-130 at DraftKings)

Spread analysis

San Francisco enters this game in great form, winning four straight games, including last night’s contest against the Dodgers. However, now is the time to sell high on the Giants, as they are slated to go against left-hander Anderson.

Anderson’s terrific season has been amplified by an incredible stretch of pitching entering this game, and following Anderson is one of the best bullpens in baseball.

Since August 1, the Dodgers’ relief pitching ranks third in the league in ERA, first in WHIP, first in BA, first in SLG, first in wOBA, and seventh in FIP. While Los Angeles utilized three relievers in last night’s game, most of its best arms (Evan Phillips, Craig Kimbrel, and Alex Vesia) are available for this game.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles ranks higher than the Giants in every hitting category across the board. The Dodgers are extremely heavy favorites in this game, but for good reason, as they own every advantage in this contest regardless of who they throw out on the mound.

Over/Under analysis

The total in this game is pretty much untouchable, due to the fact that the Giants are unwilling to release their plans for who is pitching for them tonight. The rumor swirling around is that left-hander Jarlin Garcia is going to act as a “primary pitcher” and go one-to-two innings before the actual “starting pitcher” enters the game.

However, nobody seems to know who that will be, and this information is unconfirmed. Without knowing who the Giants are starting, it is hard to make a prediction on the game’s total.

Garcia is a decent pitcher and could limit the damage early on, which makes me think that the Under could be a play, but nothing is confirmed so I would advise to stay away.

Starting pitchers

Bullpen: A bullpen day is anticipated for San Francisco tonight. However, at time of writing, no initial starter has been confirmed.

Tyler Anderson (13-3, 2.68 ERA): Taking the mound for Los Angeles is left-hander Tyler Anderson. Having a career year thus far, Anderson will look to keep the dominant pitching going against San Francisco, a team he has had plenty of success against in the past.

Anderson likes to consistently pump his 4-seam fastball to set up his changeup, while he routinely mixes in a cutter. While he typically is not a strikeout-heavy pitcher, his success stems from his ability to prevent hard hits, which is evidenced by his 95th percentile ranking in hard-hit percentage.
