A pair of veteran righties are toeing the rubber for Sunday Night Baseball between the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field tonight.
Philadelphia will send Aaron Nola to the bump, with Chicago countering with Jameson Taillon. Here are my Phillies vs. Cubs predictions and MLB picks for their series finale at The Friendly Confines on Sunday, April 27.
Phillies vs Cubs prediction for Sunday Night Baseball
My Phillies vs Cubs best bet: Cubs moneyline (-120 at Caesars)
The Chicago Cubs offense has raked against righties this season with a second-ranked .341 wOBA and seventh-ranked .180 ISO. They face reeling Philadelphia Phillies starter Aaron Nola on Sunday Night Baseball.
Nola has pitched better than his surface numbers suggest, with his 3.36 xFIP well below his 6.43 ERA, and the veteran’s unsustainable .364 BABIP and 66.5% strand rate are going to improve over the coming weeks.
Still, he served up a pair of solo home runs in his last outing to the New York Mets, and Juan Soto was inches from taking Nola yard for a three-run shot. Nola’s hard-hit rate and barrel percentage are both up from last season, and his velocity and Stuff+ grades are down across the board.
Turning to Cubbies righty Jameson Taillon, he’s pitched well at Wrigley Field the past two years with a tidy 2.30 ERA while limiting opposing hitters to a minuscule .267 on-base percentage and .266 wOBA.
Philadelphia has also started slowly against right-handed arms with a 15th-ranked .319 wOBA and 25th-ranked .130 ISO.
I anticipate Taillon navigating the Philly lineup more successfully than Nola fares against the North Siders and paving the way to Chicago flying the flag tonight.
Caesars QuickPick: Our Phillies vs Cubs same-game parlay (SGP)
In addition to the highlighted Nola shortcomings, he’s been particularly vulnerable to left-handed hitters and has served up a .429 wOBA and .990 OPS. It sets up as a perfect matchup for Chicago superstar Kyle Tucker.
He’s posted a monster .284 batting average, .385 wOBA and .245 ISO over the past four years, including respective .316, .433 and .276 marks since joining the Cubbies.
The final leg of this same-game parlay is uncorrelated with the Cubs' moneyline, so it provides a nice multiplier for the odds. While Philly slugger Bryce Harper is mired in a bit of a funk with an active 2-for-18 run at the dish, he doubled on Saturday and has been a force against righties throughout his career.
Harper’s teed off on right-handed arms for a .287 batting average, .382 wOBA and .232 ISO since the beginning of the 2022 campaign, after all.
