The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays were rained out yesterday but will make it up with a doubleheader this afternoon.

Toronto has struggled to score through the first month of the season, but could turn things around against New York starter Clarke Schmidt, who’s yet to put together a quality start.

I’ll break down why I think the visitors will put up some runs early in today’s Blue Jays vs. Yankees predictions and MLB picks for Sunday, April 27.

Blue Jays vs Yankees prediction

My Blue Jays vs Yankees best bet: Blue Jays first-five team total Over 1.5 (-140 at Caesars)

It’s no secret that the Toronto Blue Jays have come out of the gate flat offensively this season, averaging just 3.54 runs per game and exactly two runs through the first five innings. The Jays are in luck this afternoon, though, as they’re set to face New York Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt.

The right-hander has had a rocky start to his season with a bloated 7.45 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP over his first two outings. Schmidt was especially bad in his last outing on Monday as he gave up seven hits, two homers, and five earned runs to the Guardians in just four innings of work.

The Yankees starter ranks in the Bottom 15th percentile for hard-hit rate, according to Baseball Savant, which is likely a product of how often he’s left pitches up in the zone. Three of Schmidt’s four pitches — his cutter, sinker, and sweeper — are all finishing above the middle of the zone, and batters have punished him accordingly.

The Blue Jays don’t have a ton of firepower right now, but they're hitting a respectable .242 as a team. It may take some small ball, but I can see the Jays scoring at least a couple of runs against Schmidt.

Blue Jays moneyline

Blue Jays team total Over 3.5

Under 8.5

The Blue Jays should have a significant advantage on the mound this afternoon as Chris Bassitt gets the call. Bassitt owns a tidy 1.88 ERA over his first five starts and has held opponents to one earned run or less in four of those outings.

The Jays aren’t scoring much, but as discussed, I think they’ll be able to put up at least a few runs against Schmidt. Toronto has scored 4+ runs in six of its last 12 contests and I think they’ll be able to get over the hump vs. the struggling Yankees starter.

Still, this should be a pretty low-scoring affair with Bassitt on the hill as the Under has cashed in four of the last five for both teams entering Sunday.
