Starting pitchers
Alex Wood (10-4, 4.11 ERA): Wood has given up just two runs in each of his last two starts, and the Giants have actually come away with wins in five of his last six trips to the hill. The lefty doesn’t pitch late into games, but he strikes out a lot of batters and gives San Francisco a good chance nearly every time he’s out there. He does, however, have a pretty high ERA, so there is some luck factored into his excellent record. The Giants tend to hit well when he’s on the mound.
Carlos Carrasco (0-2, 8.82 ERA): Carrasco allowed just three runs in five innings of work against the Los Angeles Dodgers in his last start. That performance was probably the closest we’ve seen to Carrasco throwing back the clock and showing us some of his stuff from his time with the Cleveland Indians. The righty just got back into the rotation, but New York Is hoping that he’ll get right and pitch well the rest of the way. It’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Moneyline pick
The Mets are 15th in the league in BABIP against left-handed pitching, which suggests their 21st-ranked batting average against southpaws is a bit unlucky. New York makes better contact than the numbers suggest against lefties, and the team isn’t going to back down in this meeting with Wood tonight. The lefty has a great record for the Giants this season, but it’s been proven that he is extremely hittable.
Don’t be surprised if Pete Alonso and Javier Baez both come up big for New York in this game. The two of them have combined to hit 31 homers with 101 RBIs against left-handed pitching this season, and both of them will be threats to go yard in this game. Meanwhile, J.D. Davis is another guy that hits lefties really hard, as the 28-year-old is batting .324 with four homers and 17 RBIs against them this season.
As for New York’s starter in this game, it can certainly be worse than Carrasco. The righty was once one of the game’s best starters, but he hasn’t quite been himself in 2021. Still, Carrasco is coming off a solid performance against the Dodgers, and his confidence should only grow from there.
PREDICTION: Mets ML (+108)
Over/Under pick
The Mets offense is bound to wake up soon, and this matchup with Wood presents an opportunity for New York to put a few runs on the scoreboard early. The lefty has been really good this season, but he does struggle with his consistency and the Mets have the personnel to score runs against lefties. On the other hand, it would be amazing for New York if Carrasco can turn in a quality start.
That would give the Mets a chance to win this game, but it would also put Over bettors in a decent position if he gives up three runs in six innings. New York’s bullpen is more than capable of struggling from there, which is part of why this Over is so enticing.
PREDICTION: Over 9.0 (+100)
