Indians vs A's betting preview

Starting pitchers

Cal Quantrill (1-2, 4.23 ERA): Quantrill has performed pretty well since being stretched into a starter, and he had been particularly strong heading into the All-Star break. In the righty’s last two starts, he gave up just six earned runs over 11.1 innings of work. Quantrill doesn’t strike a lot of hitters out, but the Indians won’t care as long as he’s giving them quality starts — or close to them.

Frankie Montas (8-7, 4.41 ERA): In Montas’ last start before the break, the righty gave up just one earned run in 6.2 innings against the Houston Astros and struck out 10 in the process. The 28-year-old has had an up-and-down season for Oakland, but he does have some impressive stuff and is capable of going out there and turning in a gem.

Moneyline pick

Mitch Moreland returned to the Athletics lineup on Friday, and he gave Oakland a spark in that one. Moreland, who absolutely punishes right-handed pitching, homered in the fourth inning, and there’s no reason to believe that he’ll be sitting in the dugout in this game.

That means that Quantrill will have to be very careful, as it wouldn’t be surprising at all if Moreland took him yard. That’s quite the problem for all of the Athletics opponents moving forward, as Matt Olson was already one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball and he’s out there nightly. With that said, Oakland’s offense has a good chance of getting hot in this game, and that would take some pressure off of Montas.

Montas is coming off arguably his best start of the season, and he has a good opportunity to continue rolling against this Indians team. Cleveland’s lineup has only 16 total at-bats against Montas, so the Indians hitters aren’t exactly going to be familiar with his approach. Bradley Zimmer has, however, homered off Montas in the past, so that’s one guy Montas will be paying closer attention to.

PREDICTION: Athletics ML (-168)

Over/Under pick

While Montas gave up a homer against Zimmer, there’s really not a major history of production for this Cleveland team against the righty. That doesn’t mean everything when looking at matchups, but It certainly gives Montas something of an edge. Also, Zimmer’s not exactly some dangerous slugger. It’d be surprising if he came through with a big hit in this game.

Meanwhile, the Athletics are certainly a threat to get it going in this one, but that could mean five or six runs, and this total isn’t very low. If Montas deals the way he is capable of, Oakland will have a hard time hitting this Over on its own.

PREDICTION: Under 9.0 (-110)
