Starting pitchers
Jean Carlos Mejia (1-2, 6.11 ERA): Mejia was a disaster in his last start, allowing six earned runs in five innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The righty gave up two homers in that start, and that came after allowing none the rest of the season. Perhaps the scouting reports have caught up to him and we’ll start seeing more hitters taking him yard. One good sign is that he did pitch 2.1 scoreless innings against the Twins in May.
Jose Berrios (7-2, 3.56 ERA): Berrios has been hittable in his last couple of trips to the hill, as he has allowed nine earned runs over his last 19.0 innings on the mound. Having said that, Minnesota won all three of those starts, so his team has had his back. But the righty is going to need to be a bit better moving forward in order to keep winning games. Also, Berrios gave up two earned in just 5.2 innings of work in a loss to this Indians team on April 26.

Moneyline pick
Mejia comes into this game after having allowed 12 earned runs in his last 9.2 innings on the mound. The righty’s role with the Indians has increased in recent weeks, and the results just aren’t all that impressive. The 24-year-old was once one of the higher-ranked prospects in Cleveland’s organization, but it’s hard to imagine him turning things around in this spot. Mejia did pitch 2.1 scoreless innings against the Twins earlier in the year, but he has a 9.31 ERA on the road in 2021. Against an offense that’s red hot, it’s difficult to suggest backing him. Even with some key players out, Minnesota has enough to get to him. Jorge Polanco and Nelson Cruz are two that just might get a hold of a bad pitch here.
Berrios is 4-1 when pitching at home this season, but his 4.29 ERA at Target Field is worse than his 3.02 ERA on the road. Still, this is a good matchup for him to come out and lower that number. In his last meeting with Cleveland, Berrios only struck out three batters in 5.2 innings of work. He should be a bit better with his swing-and-miss stuff here, as he has struck out 14 batters over his last two starts. The Indians are also struggling offensively right now, which only makes it more likely that Berrios will get it going tonight.
PREDICTION: Twins ML (-176)
Over/Under pick
The Twins have been rolling offensively over the course of this recent winning stretch, as they are averaging 5.8 runs per game over the last six games. Now, Minnesota gets to face a starter that was shelled in his last trip to the mound, and the Twins should be able to get to him a bit in this one. Mejia has a 9.31 ERA in road appearances this year, so he could be somewhat rattled in this game.
Meanwhile, Berrios has been giving up some runs over the last couple of outings, so he isn’t exactly flawless at the moment. It wouldn’t be shocking if the Indians get a few off of him, even in a losing effort.
