Mets vs Giants Picks and Predictions: Gausman Is a Giant Problem for Mets

The slumping Mets, who have lost 10 of their last 14 games, are coming off a sweep to the Dodgers and now face the NL West-leading Giants. With ace Kevin Gausman on the bump against Rich Hill, we like San Francisco to deliver another blow to New York.

The New York Mets won’t have much time to dwell on getting swept at home by the Los Angeles Dodgers as they head out west to take on the San Francisco Giants for a three-game set starting Monday.

The Mets had to jump on a plane after last night’s loss on Sunday Night Baseball. It was their 10th loss in their last 14 games and they now have to take on the NL West-leading Giants and ace Kevin Gausman.

The Giants will be big favorites but is there value with the underdog? Check out our free MLB betting picks and predictions for Mets vs. Giants on Monday, August 16.

Mets vs Giants betting preview

Starting pitchers

Rich Hill (6-4, 4.05 ERA): Good ol’ Dick Mountain takes the ball for the Mets in this one. Hill hasn’t exactly found his groove yet with the Mets, pitching to a 5.00 ERA and allowing opponents to hit for a .258 average in his first four games with New York.

Kevin Gausman (11-5, 2.29 ERA): Gausman has bounced back from his mini-slump, putting up solid performances in back-to-back starts, allowing two runs on nine hits over his last 11 innings of work.

Runline pick

Talk about needing a short memory. The Mest are coming off a sweep to the Dodgers and then had to get on a late-night flight to San Francisco, arriving early this morning. So it would be understandable if they don’t have their legs underneath them for this one. And the matchup makes everything that much tougher.

The Giants have won 11 of their last 14 games to hold a four-game lead over the Dodgers in the National League West and hand the ball to their ace, Gausman. The right-hander is starting to find his rhythm again and is still limiting opponents to a very low .182 batting average this season.

It doesn’t help that the Mets are 0-for-their-last-25 when hitting with runners in scoring position and rank 24th in batting and 23rd in OPS when facing right-handed pitching this season.

Hill is certainly reliable, but he likely won’t last more than five innings in this matchup and then has to hand the ball to a Mets bullpen that ranks 16th in ERA and 19th in opponent batting average. This is just a tough spot for the Mets against a good team — take the Giants to win by multiple runs.

PREDICTION: Giants -1.5 (-105)

Over/Under pick

When it comes to the total the early money has come in on the Over, moving the number from 8.0 to 8.5, but that number looks big enough to jump on the other side.

While Hill hasn’t been great recently, he has still allowed three earned runs or fewer in six of his last seven starts and faces a Giants team that doesn’t handle southpaws as well as it does right-handers. The Giants rank a below-average 19th in batting average and 16th in OPS when facing lefties this season.

With the Giants not as strong against left-handers and the Mets’ struggles to cash in runs, plus the tough travel, this one looks like a game where the pitchers will have the advantage. Take the Under.

PREDICTION: Under 8.5 (Odds)
