Padres vs A's betting preview
Starting pitchers
Blake Snell (4-4, 5.44 ERA): Snell just got rocked by this A's team on July 28, as the lefty gave up seven earned runs in four innings of work, being done in by allowing four walks and seven hits. Control has been an issue for the former Cy Young winner, as he has issued three or more free passes in five consecutive games — and his 1.61 WHIP is the highest he’s had since his rookie season.
Sean Manaea (8-6, 3.01 ERA): Manaea completely outperformed Snell in that matchup last week, as the A's starter turned in six shutout innings and struck out nine batters in a 10-4 win. Prior to that game, Manaea pitched seven innings of one-run ball against the Mariners, striking out 13 batters in the process — he’s really in a nice groove coming into this game.

Moneyline pick
After the way Snell pitched against the A's in his last start — and considering Oakland added Starling Marte, Yan Gomes, and Josh Harrison at the trade deadline — it’s hard to find a reason to back the Padres here.
Sure, San Diego has some enticing odds in a somewhat winnable game, but Snell just doesn’t have the confidence right now. The lefty gave up seven earned runs at home against this team last week, and he just hasn’t been able to stay out of his own way lately. Snell continues to walk a ton of batters and he now heads on the road, where he is 1-3 with an 8.02 ERA this season.
Manaea has also dominated this Padres team in his career. In three starts against San Diego, he is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA. The lefty has thrown 18 total innings across those three outings, and he has given up only three earned runs.
Also, only two teams have hit fewer home runs than the Padres against left-handed pitching this season, so that’s not exactly a good sign for “Slam Diego.”
PREDICTION: Athletics (-160)
Over/Under pick
To be fair, Snell is not as bad as he was against the A's in his last trip to the mound — but he’s also no longer the same guy that won the AL Cy Young back in 2018. The truth lies somewhere in the middle.
With that said, look for Snell to allow more in the range of four-five earned runs in this game, giving this Under a chance to hit because of how good Manaea has been, both overall and against the Padres in his career.
It really wouldn’t be surprising at all if San Diego manages one — or zero — runs against the lefty in this game... especially with Fernando Tatis Jr. sidelined.
PREDICTION: Under 8 (+100)
