The Chicago Cubs have lost seven consecutive games after last night’s 4-1 defeat to the San Diego Padres, in the first of a four-game series.

The Cubs are sending struggling pitcher Kyle Hendricks to the mound to try and snap the losing streak. The Padres counter with left-hander Sean Manaea, as San Diego tries to keep up with its rivals, the Dodgers.

Can the Padres win their second straight game or will the Cubs finally end their losing ways?

Padres vs Cubs betting preview

Starting pitchers

Sean Manaea (3-3, 3.52 ERA): After a rough May, where he gave up three or more runs in every appearance, Manaea seems to have settled down. He got his third win of the season last Wednesday the Mets. The 30-year-old left-hander went seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out three.

Kyle Hendricks (2-5, 5.22 ERA): This is the first start for Hendricks since June 1, and manager David Ross said he gave the 32-year-old right-hander time to rest. He did throw a bullpen on Friday so he should be ready to go on Tuesday. How he will pitch is a question mark but he has had a strong start against San Diego. On May 9, Hendricks went 8 2-3 innings, allowing no runs on three hits with seven strikeouts.

Padres vs Cubs picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The Cubs and Padres are going in opposite directions. The Padres were chasing the Dodgers for the lead in the NL West for most of May and finally caught them with last night’s win. Now, San Diego will try and take the lead in the division.

The Cubs shouldn’t put up much of a fight. Chicago has been dreadful for the last few weeks, going 4-14 and losing their last seven. Now, they send struggling Kyle Hendricks to the mound.

In his last three games, Hendricks has given up 14 runs and 19 hits with none of those starts going past the fifth inning. He also has five strikeouts to four walks in that span.

Hendricks has had success against the Padres in the past. A month ago, he faced the Padres at Petco Park and went 8 2-3 innings, allowing no runs and three hits. He had seven strikeouts and one walk picking up his second win of the season.

In 12 starts against San Diego, Hendricks is 8-2 with a 2.67 ERA. Considering his recent struggles, however, that seems like ancient history. The Padres are 21-11 on the road, which leads the majors, and are 4-0 in their last four games against NL Central teams.

Prediction: Padres moneyline (-133 at WynnBet)

Over/Under analysis

A lot is being made of the expected 11 mph win blowing out of Wrigley Field at game time, with the other factor influencing such a high total is the home runs allowed by both starting pitchers.

Hendricks has allowed 11 homers this season, tied for 11th most in the majors. San Diego’s Manaea has given up eight dingers, good for 37th.

Manaea, however, hasn’t allowed a homer in his last two starts. Also, the lefty has only two earned runs in his last two starts, good for a 1.38 ERA for June and 3.52 overall.

Neither team is a home run threat. The Cubs are 17th in the league in homers with 60, while the Padres are 26th with 47. The Padres are 12th in runs with 272, an average of 4.3 a game. The Cubs are 21st in runs with 254, an average of 4.2 a game.

The Padres and Cubs would both have to go over their average by three total runs to reach the Over of 10.5, while the starting pitchers would have to go three runs over their collective ERAs to reach the Over.

I don’t see Manaea doing that. He has been solid in his last two starts and should repeat those performances. Hendricks worries me more, but Cubs manager David Ross hopefully yanks him before he does too much damage. And, who knows, Hendricks might revert back to previous form against the Padres.

Prediction: Under 10.5 (+105 at William Hill)

Best bet

San Diego is on a hot streak right now, winning five of its last seven games, and I don’t see that changing against the Cubs — especially with Hendricks on the mound.

I know Hendricks has had success in the past against the Padres, but his recent struggles trump any previous performances. He is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in his past three overall starts and 0-2 with an 8.04 ERA in his past three at home.

In San Diego’s last five games, it has won four of them by two or more runs. The Padres are 4-0 in their last four road games and 5-1 in their last six after allowing two runs or fewer in their previous game.

The Cubs are 23-48 in their last 71 games following a loss and 7-19 in their last 26 during the second game of a series.

Pick: Padres -1.5 (+120 at FanDuel)
