Two NL West teams that got off to a winning start to the season face off Monday night as the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants meet at Oracle Park.
San Diego dropped the first game of the year against the Arizona Diamondbacks but then won the next three to finish the four-game series. San Francisco took two of three from the Miami Marlins in a low-scoring series.

Padres vs Giants betting preview
Starting pitchers
Nick Martinez (2021 in Japan: 9-4, 1.60 ERA): You'll notice a lack of MLB statistics in 2021 for Martinez. Those Major League statistics would be similarly blank if we listed the years 2018 through 2021, as that’s how long it’s been since he threw a pitch in MLB. He’s been pitching in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league during his time away from the MLB, where his 1.60 ERA in 2021 across 140.2 innings earned him a call. The 31-year-old right-hander was last seen in the MLB in 2017 with the Texas Rangers, going 3-8 with a 5.66 ERA across 111.1 innings. He struggled to strike batters out (career 5.14 K/9) and gave up too many dingers (2.10 HR/9 in 2017).
Alex Wood (2021: 10-4, 3.83 ERA): Wood, the 31-year-old southpaw, has bounced around the league over the years. He had success earlier in his career from 2013 to 2018 with the Braves and Dodgers before two unsuccessful seasons with the Reds (2019) and Dodgers (2020). His first season in San Francisco went well in 2021 — he went 10-4 with a 3.83 ERA and a stellar 9.87 K/9 ratio.

Padres vs Giants picks and predictions
Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.
Moneyline analysis
The Giants and the Padres begin a three-game series Monday night at Oracle Park. San Diego starting pitcher Nick Martinez will be making his first MLB appearance since 2017.
Martinez spent the 2018 to 2021 seasons in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league after falling out of the MLB’s favor. He pitched to middling success in his first three seasons before breaking out in a big way in 2021 — accumulating a beautiful 1.60 ERA. Was that the sign of career resurgence, or was it a fluke? If it was a resurgence, will that level of success carry over to the states?
There are enough question marks that it's difficult to say for sure, but Martinez had dreadful peripherals during his stint with the Texas Rangers. We’re not exactly bullish on his ability given the disappointing track record until last season, but he may prove to be a capable starter. He gave up four earned runs across 12 innings in spring training.
The Giants hadn't announced a starter, but lefty Alex Wood — whose turn it is in the rotation — is unsurprisingly now listed on the team's official page. Wood was impressive a season ago, improving his ground ball rate by 10% while striking out almost 10 batters per 9 innings. The Padres struggled against lefties in 2021, hitting .241 (22nd) and swatting 39 home runs (29th).
Regardless of who’s on the mound, the Giants play well at home. They had a surprising 107-55 overall record a year ago and a 54-27 record by McCovey Cove.
The Padres went a disappointing 79-83 and struggled away from Petco Park, going 34-47 in enemy territory.
We like the Giants to continue their winning ways at Oracle.
Prediction: Giants moneyline (-139 at Unibet)
Over/Under analysis
Neither team showcased powerhouse offense on the season's opening weekend. The Padres went1-3 to the Over while the Giants are 1-2 to the Over.
While we expect a solid outing from Wood, Martinez is an uncertainty for San Diego. The Giants are without several bats in the lineup (Evan Longoria, Tommy La Stella, Lamonte Wade) and struggled to generate much offense against the Marlins in the opening series.
That being said, the Giants had a capable offense a season ago and had a tough matchup against Miami’s excellent young pitching staff in the opening series. We can give them a more favorable outlook in this matchup.
Given the Padres' struggles against lefties and the Giants' struggles as a lineup to begin the season, we're inclined to take the Under. There are some concerns regarding the weather. Current forecasts call for 24 mph winds blowing out to right field.
Prediction: Under 8.5 (-105 at Caesars)
Best bet
The winds are blowing out to right field up to 24 mph in the most recent forecast, and Martinez struggled mightily against left-handed batters in his first stint in MLB.
In 2017, Martinez surrendered a .284 BA, .347 OBP, and .361 wOBA against left-handed hitters. The Giants have a few batters with power from that side of the plate, including Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, and Mike Yastrzemski. All three are listed with HR props above the +500 range, which we'll take a poke at.
Our best bet will be the Giants' team total Over 4.5, as we'll opt to fade Martinez in his return to the states given his history of ugly peripherals.
Pick: Giants Team Total Over 4.5 (+100 at DraftKings)
