Phillies vs Padres betting preview
Starting pitchers
Kyle Gibson (2-2, 4.70 ERA): Gibson has turned in quality starts in three of his four outings as a member of the Phillies, and he’s in the midst of a great season overall. The 33-year-old’s 3.18 ERA would be the lowest mark of his career, and he’s coming off of a solid start against the Arizona Diamondbacks. There’s no reason to believe the righty won’t come out here and perform at a high level, but it is worth noting that he’s 2-3 on the road this year.
Craig Stammen (5-3, 3.16 ERA): The Padres are turning to Stammen in this one, which means this will likely be a bullpen game for San Diego. The most the righty has pitched in a single game this season was 3 1-3 innings against the Texas Rangers back on April 11. He’ll likely go two or three in this one, and then San Diego will turn things over to a bullpen that is best in the league in team ERA.

Moneyline pick
In Gibson’s two road starts since being traded to the Phillies, the righty has allowed just three runs over 12 2-3 innings of work. He’s been extremely reliable as a member of the rotation all season, whether it was for the Rangers or the Phillies.
The key question for Gibson is whether or not he can get outs against guys like Eric Hosmer and Manny Machado. The two of them are a combined 20-for-62 with five doubles, a homer, and 12 RBIs, with most of that damage being done by Hosmer. Outside of them, Gibson has been able to control the rest of the guys in this lineup.
The Phillies, meanwhile, should be able to eke out a few runs against this Padres bullpen. It might not be more than three or four, but they’ll be hoping that’s enough with Gibson on the mound. That’s why they went out and traded for the veteran righty.
PREDICTION: Philadelphia (+136)
Over/Under pick
The first two games in this series have gone Under the total, with the teams combining to score just seven runs in each of the first two contests. Now the Phillies send a good starter to the mound, and Gibson has been even better when pitching on the road this season. With that, it’s hard to imagine him not turning in a quality start for Philadelphia.
On the other side, the Padres have one of the best bullpens in the league and It’ll be exclusively a bullpen game for them here.
That puts a little more stress on these relievers than normal, but it’s still not likely that these guys will just meltdown and give up a ton of runs. Overall, the total might seem a little low on paper, but these teams likely aren’t in for a high-scoring game.
PREDICTION: Under 8.5 (-110)
