Lourdes have mercy

Sportsbooks haven’t figured out how hot Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is at the plate. So, until they do, we’re going to go back to well with his total bases prop at nice plus money, as Gurriel and the Jays continue their series against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Blue Jays outfielder, who has notoriously been a slow starter over the course of his career, is starting to heat up with the summer months. Gurriel is now in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak, hitting .500 with a 1.217 OPS during this stretch. The most impressive part is that he has recorded a multi-hit game six times in this eight-game span.

Now, he’ll get a great chance to extend that streak to nine straight when he digs in against Orioles starter Jordan Lyles.

It feels like the O’s just need Lyles to eat some innings at this point because his results on the mound have been less than, um, good. The veteran right-hander is pitching to an expected ERA of 5.59 while surrendering an expected batting average of .302 to opposing teams.

Lyles has also given up 26 hits over his 14 1-3 innings and in one start against the Jays last season (as a member of the Texas Rangers) he allowed six runs on seven hits in four innings.

We’re going to keep riding this train with Gurriel until he cools off or the value dries up.

Pick: Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Over 1.5 total bases (+135 at DraftKings)

Toothless Tigers

Chicago White Sox starter Dylan Cease is coming off a really weird start against the Los Angeles Dodgers where he allowed six runs, all unearned on six hits. Cease will get a chance to bounce back when he takes the ball tonight against the Detroit Tigers.

Cease has battled his control a bit over his last two starts, giving up 10 walks. Overall though, Cease has been great this season, pitching to an expected ERA of 2.85 and limiting opponents to a .198 batting average while racking up 89 strikeouts in 63 innings of work.

On Tuesday night, he’ll get to ply his trade against a Tigers lineup that has been one of the worst in baseball this season, particularly when facing right-handers.

The Tigers' 2.78 runs per game is the worst in majors by a fairly wide margin, while they rank 29th in batting average and 30th in OPS when facing right-handers. Cease also limited the Tigers to one run on two hits while striking out eight in five innings back on Opening Day.

While the White Sox have also struggled against right-handers, the Tigers are handing the ball to Drew Hutchinson — a guy who has made two starts since 2018 and has a 5.41 expected ERA in 10 relief appearances this season.

The White Sox should do enough on offense to help Cease secure the win here.

Pick: Dylan Cease to record a win (+100 at PointsBet)

Turner takes from Thor

Welcome to your weekly PSA about Noah Syndergaard giving up stolen bases. No one has allowed more this season than the Angels right-hander, and while sometimes it can be hard to figure out which opponent to back to swipe a bag, today, it's smacking us in the face.

Thor has surrendered 14 stolen bases this season, which is three more than the next closest pitcher, and has given up at least one in seven of his nine starts.

This has been a problem for Syndergaard dating back to his time with the Mets, due to a slow and deliberate delivery to the plate.

Now, he has to deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers and speedster Trea Turner. The Dodgers' shortstop has stolen 13 bases this season, which is the fifth-most in MLB and works out to a stolen base in 21.7% of his games.

What also makes Turner the safest bet here is that he hits the ball and gets on base. A lot. Turner has at least one hit in 33 of his last 34 games, good for a .385 on-base percentage. He has swiped nine bags over that span.

If Turner gets on base tonight, and he has a great chance to against Syndergaard, who is giving up a .279 expected batting average, he’ll look to be aggressive on the base paths.

Pick: Trea Turner to steal a base (+310 at DraftKings)

It’s not an interesting story. Seriously.
