Today’s MLB Prop Bets, Picks and Predictions: Starting Pitchers Means Business Today

It's been a rough season already for Baltimore, but not for its ace John Means, who owns a 1.70 ERA, 0.75 WHP, and is limiting opponents to a .163 batting average this season.

We're starting a brand new week off fresh, with some baseball prop bets that home in on some hot starting pitching.

Miami Marlins rookie Trevor Rogers will be looking to mow down the Philadelphia Phillies while Baltimore Orioles’ ace John Means attempts to bounce back from his first rough outing of the season when he faces off against the Minnesota Twins.

We break down and pick those games and more with our best free MLB prop bets and predictions for Monday, May 24.

Today’s MLB props and picks

Trevor Rogers Over 7.5 Strikeouts (+110)

The Miami Marlins may have something in rookie Trevor Rogers. The 23-year-old southpaw looks like he’ll be a big part of the Marlins rotation for years to come, pitching to a 1.74 ERA and limiting opponents to a .197 batting average thanks to an electric fastball and an above-average slider and changeup.

The lefty is also striking out an impressive 11.3 batter per nine innings and he’ll get a chance to keep that up against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.

The Phillies are a free-swinging bunch that strikes out the third most in baseball, getting rung up 10.3 times per game, which includes 35 times in their three-game series against the Boston Red Sox over the weekend.

This is a relatively high strikeout number for Rogers but he’s had seven Ks or more in six of his nine starts and his last start came against this same Phillies team where he racked up eight punchouts. When you mix in the plus money, the Over is good value here.

Cardinals-White Sox Under 4.5 Five-Inning Total (-110)

It’s a matchup of Central Division leaders as the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox open a three-game set at Guaranteed Rate Field and Game 1 features an intriguing pitching matchup as Kwang-Hyun Kim toes the rubber against Lance Lynn.

Kim, the former KBO star, is coming off an erratic start against the San Diego Padres in which he lasted just 3 1-3 innings, due to some walks, but the lefty has been mostly solid in 2021. Kim has allowed just one earned run in each of his last five starts, limiting opponents to a .231 batting average.

He’ll need to limit the walks against a dangerous White Sox lineup but the Pale Hose have been in a bit of a slump lately, plating just 11 runs during their last five games, a stretch that has seen them go 1-4.

On the other side is Lynn, who has been loving his new digs. Lynn is sporting a 1.55 ERA and is limiting opponents to a .183 batting average this season. He has also allowed no earned runs in four of his seven starts.

Lynn faces off what is a top-heavy Cardinals’ lineup that is struggling to find consistency. They are also hitting just .214 on the road against right-handed pitching this season. Look for pitching to be the story early in this one.

Orioles -0.5 Five-Inning Runline (+110)

The Baltimore Orioles have lost five games in a row heading into tonight’s matchup with the Minnesota Twins but they’ll put their best foot forward as they hand the ball to ace John Means.

Means has been a shining star in what will amount to another long season in Baltimore. The lefty owns a 1.70 ERA, a 0.75 WHP, and is limiting opponents to a .163 batting average. While Means is coming off his worst start of the season, it wasn’t even that bad, allowing four runs on six hits in 6 1-3 innings against what was a red-hot Tampa Bay Rays team.

Means will look to bounce back against a shockingly inconsistent Twins team. At 17-29, they have a record that matches the Orioles and have struggled against top-tier starters — and Means fits the bill.

On top of that, the Twins counter with Matt Shoemaker. The right-hander has a 6.08 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP this season, showing struggles with his command and surrendering 10 dingers. While the O’s aren’t notching wins, the offense is actually producing, scoring 6.67 runs per game over their last six contests, making the value with Means too good to pass up.
