The Texas Rangers will be hoping to avoid a six-game losing streak when they take on the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. And perhaps more importantly, they will be looking to prevent Seattle from picking up a sweep in this series.

Rangers vs Mariners odds

This odds widget represents the best odds available for each betting market from regulated sportsbooks.

The Rangers were +134 underdogs when this game first became available, but the best price you’ll find on them now is +123. They’re all the way down to +110 at quite a few books.

The total, which opened at 8.0 and hasn’t moved very much at all. You actually have to pay a decent amount of juice to take the Under, so it’d be moving to 7.5, if anything.

Rangers vs Mariners betting preview

Starting pitchers

Taylor Hearn (0-1, 4.70 ERA): Hearn mostly worked as a reliever last season, but he did start 11 games for Texas. This year, the lefty has given up four earned runs over just 7 2-3 innings of work in two starts. Hearn isn’t exactly working deep into games just yet, but that’s fine as long as he’s not getting lit up. He did throw roughly 90 pitches on quite a few occasions last season, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Rangers let him throw more than the 82 he did last game.

Marco Gonzales (1-1, 3.00 ERA): After really struggling in his first start of the year, Gonzales struck out six batters and gave up just one run in seven innings of work against the Houston Astros last Friday. The lefty has been extremely reliable as a member of Seattle’s rotation for the better part of five years, and the Mariners will be counting on him to turn in a good performance here.

Rangers vs Mariners picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The Rangers are off to a rough start to the 2022 season, but they have to feel pretty good about their chances of earning a win here. While the season is still very young, Texas’ .286 average against left-handed pitching is the fourth-best mark in baseball, and only two teams have scored more runs than the Rangers against lefties.

On top of that, Texas is fourth in the league in on-base plus slugging against lefties. With that said, there’s hope that this dormant offense will get hot here.

Keep an eye on Marcus Semien for the Rangers in this one. The second baseman signed a huge contract with them during the offseason, but he is off to an ice-cold start in 2022. Semien is, however, a player that has always been better when hitting lefties. This could be the game where he breaks through and turns in a big performance for his team.

Also, Corey Seager and Nathaniel Lowe might hit from the left side of the plate, but they’re both plenty comfortable hitting southpaws. That could be big in determining the outcome of this one.

Hearn also happened to be really solid against the Mariners last season. The lefty gave up just eight earned runs over 19.1 innings against Seattle, and he had one start in which he threw five innings of two-run ball against the Mariners. If he can give the Rangers five innings without imploding here, the team should be able to stop the losing streak.

Prediction: Rangers moneyline (+123 at Unibet)

Over/Under analysis

These teams combined to score only eight runs in the first game of this series, and they came out and scored only six when they played last night.

The last time Hearn pitched against the Mariners, the Under hit rather easily. Seattle earned a 3-1 win in that game back in August of 2021, and the Under also happens to be 3-0 in Gonzales’ last three starts against Texas.

Part of the reason the Under has hit in the last few instances these pitchers have started in this head-to-head series could have something to do with the fact that both of these teams had some of the worst batting averages against lefties last year — both in the Bottom 5 in MLB. And while Texas has certainly added some firepower to its lineup, it’s probably not enough for the team to go out there and carry Over bettors to a win. Even if the Rangers score five or so runs in this one, the Under is still very much in play.

It also doesn’t hurt that this has been one of the more pitcher-friendly ballparks in baseball over the years.

Prediction: Under 8 (-115 at WynnBET)

Best bet

Semien has been underwhelming since signing with the Rangers thus far, but he’s too good of a hitter not to turn things around. He’s going to get hot extremely soon and this matchup gives him a great opportunity to get going. In his career, Semien is batting .267 with an on-base plus slugging of .802 against left-handed pitching, and he has 51 homers and 147 RBIs against southpaws.

Semien is just 7-for-28 with two doubles, one homer, and five RBIs against Gonzales in his career, but the fact that he has seen the lefty so often is only going to help him continue to get better in this matchup. And overall, the Rangers are going to need offense from somewhere in this game. Just don’t be too caught off guard if it’s Semien that ultimately comes through. And all it will take is a double for this bet to win. Two singles would work just fine as well.

Pick: Marcus Semien Over 1.5 total bases (+110)
