It may be the greatest rivalry in sports, but it sure has been one-sided recently, as the Boston Red Sox continued their dominance over the New York Yankees. Boston is now a perfect 7-0 against New York this season after last night’s series-opening win at Yankee Stadium.

The Red Sox will look to make it a great eight in a row when they hand the ball to All-Star Nathan Eovaldi, but they’ll be in tough against Yankees ace Gerrit Cole. So, who has the MLB betting edge? Find out in our MLB free picks and predictions for Red Sox vs. Yankees on Saturday, July 17.

MLB sharp money and line movement report

By Patrick Everson

PointsBet USA went up this morning with New York a -160 favorite, dipped to -130 shortly thereafter, then rose a few cents to -135, where the moneyline stands at 4:45 p.m. ET. Contrary to the bulk of movement, the Pinstripes are getting the majority of dollars. "Tickets are 50/50, but 70 percent of cash is on the Yanks," PointsBet's Wyatt Yearout said. The total is stable at 8, with a 2/1 ticket count on the Under and money running just shy of 2/1 on the Over

Starting pitchers

Nathan Eovaldi (9-5, 3.66 ERA): Eovaldi was on cruise control for a while, limiting opponents to three earned runs or fewer in seven of eight starts before the Angels roughed him up for five runs on nine hits in his final start before the All-Star break.

Gerrit Cole (9-4, 2.68 ERA): It looked like the sticky stuff ban was having an effect on Cole. The right-hander was pitching to a 5.24 ERA and giving up 10 home runs in a six-start stretch since the start of June. But then he closed the first half of the season with a complete-game shutout of the Astros where he allowed just three hits and struck out 12.

Moneyline pick

Yup, the Red Sox continued their dominance over the COVID and injury-riddled Yankees, winning their seventh straight game against their hated rivals 4-0 last night. Not only is Boston 7-0 in this matchup this season but has outscored New York by a score of 40-17.

But if there is anyone capable of stopping a skid like that, it's Cole. After a rough month of June, the right-hander is hoping he has re-found his good stuff after his complete-game shutout of the Astros. And, despite the slump, Cole is still the betting favorite to win the American League Cy Young Award.

That said, he will be in tough against a Red Sox lineup that is one of the best in baseball. Boston ranks fifth in scoring, third in batting average, and fourth in OPS.

Countering Cole is Eovaldi, who has been pretty much the opposite of Cole over the last month or so, pitching well for the bulk and getting shelled right before the break. The good stretch included two starts against the Yankees where he allowed just one earned run on 13 hits over 13 innings.

The Yankees are this close in price because of Cole. And that's it, because their offense is inconsistent and missing a handful of guys including Aaron Judge and Gio Urshela, and the bullpen is struggling. It’s hard to fade the Red Sox in this spot getting such value.

PREDICTION: Red Sox (-115)

Over/Under pick

These two hated rivals have played the O/U to a 4-3 record this season, but the Under has gone 3-1 in the last four meetings and there is a good chance that will continue.

We wrote about how Eovaldi has pitched well against New York this season, but the other thing he has done well is limit the long ball, surrendering just five for the season. And the thing about the Yankees this season: If they aren’t hitting homers, they aren’t scoring. While they rank in the Top 10 in home runs, they are 24th in scoring.

On top of that, the Yankees have really struggled to score against their rivals, plating just 2.43 runs per game over their seven meetings so far this season.

The Red Sox, on the other hand, are just a little less potent away from Fenway Park, seeing their scoring average drop to 4.71, helping the Under go 8-3-2 in their last 12 road games. Bet on that trend to continue in this one.

PREDICTION: Under 8.5 (-110)
