MLB Sharp Money and Line Movement Report

By Patrick Everson

Starting pitchers

Lucas Giolito (2-4, 4.97 ERA): After back-to-back years with a sub-3.50 ERA, Giolito is off to a miserable start in the 2021 season. The righty has allowed four or more earned runs in three of his last five starts and it won't be easy for him to get back on track against a Twins team that hit five homers and scored 10 earned runs in three games off him in 2020.

Matt Shoemaker (2-4, 6.62 ERA): Shoemaker just isn’t very reliable on the mound, as he has a five-inning shutout sandwiched in between two starts that saw him let up a total of 13 earned runs. You don’t know what you’re going to get when you throw him out there, but it’s rarely going to be something special. Shoemaker is the definition of a rotation arm, and the Twins are likely hoping for five innings of three or fewer runs here.

Moneyline pick

In Giolito’s career against the Twins, the righty is 4-7 with a 5.15 ERA. Last season, he gave up 10 earned runs in 14 2-3 innings pitched against them and there are quite a few guys in the Minnesota lineup that have had his number.

Max Kepler, although he hasn’t been great this season, is one of them. The lefty slugger is 8 for 24 with three homers and five RBI against Giolito in his career. He could do some damage at the plate, but so can guys like Nelson Cruz, Miguel Sano and Jorge Polanco, who have combined to hit five homers against Giolito.

On top of that, there’s also the fact that this game just seems like a bit of a trap. Chicago has been the better team this season, even with a number of key injuries. But the Twins are just a season removed from winning this division, so they're not a total pushover. And despite the fact that Giolito is the better option to Shoemaker, his struggles — both this season and in his career against the Twins — cannot be overlooked.

It seems like the oddsmakers are begging you to take the division-leading White Sox, but there’s a good chance the Twins end up winning this game.

PREDICTION: Twins (+125)

Over/Under pick

With the way the Twins have hit Giolito in the past, it’s safe to assume that Minnesota is capable of putting up a big number in this game. In fact, barring any unexpected absences in the lineup, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if the Twins ended up scoring at least five here.

Meanwhile, Minnesota might seem like the better play in this game, but that doesn’t mean Chicago won’t do any damage against Shoemaker.

All in all, this number just seems too low not to play the Over.

PREDICTION: Over 8.5 (-116)
