The Los Angeles Angels took the opener versus the New York Yankees last night, sending the Bombers to their third straight loss while the Halos pushed their winning streak to four games.
Even with the total trending up, with the Angels’ lineup and Mike Mayers being undervalued, runs be at a premium again tonight. Find out why in my free MLB picks and predictions for Yankees vs. Angels on Tuesday, August 30.

Yankees vs Angels betting preview
Starting pitchers
Jameson Taillon (12-4, 3.89 ERA): Taillon snapped a four-game stretch that saw him surrender at least three earned runs vs. the Athletics in his last outing. Now he’ll face another soft lineup, which after Ohtani and Trout, gets very weak. He held the Angels to two hits and one run over eight innings in a meeting in Yankee Stadium back in June. He hit triple-digit pitches for just the fourth time this season but the Yankees are 18-7 straight up when he pitches in 2022.
Mike Mayers (1-0, 4.46 ERA): Mayers will be making his second start this season and is coming off a 15-out, scoreless performance over the Rays. Mayers spent most of his time in the pen this season but has built up a pitch count and has thrown as many as 96 pitches this season. Mayers is a fastball/slider/cutter pitcher with opponents hitting just .159 off his heater that sits in the low-to-mid 90s. That fastball has some of the best horizontal movement in baseball.

Yankees vs Angels picks and predictions
Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.
Moneyline analysis
Despite getting some pop back in their lineup with the addition of Giancarlo Stanton, the Yankees looked like their early-August selves last night vs. Jose Suarez and the Angels. The L.A. starter went six innings, allowing just two runs on three hits. Outside of the 13-run performance the Yankees had in Stanton’s return to the lineup, the Bombers have plated just nine runs across their last four games, which all came against poor opponents in the Athletics and Angels.
Stanton hasn’t done much to boost start the offense either, as the designed hitter is just 2-for-16 with two singles since his return. The bullpen just got Clay Homes back but lost Aroldis Chapman (again), and starter Jameson Taillon has elite command but is just slightly better than a league-average starter with an xERA of 4.06. Add all that together, and there's reason to like the home side, but at the right price.
The Angels’ lineup is not one bettors will be familiar with, but this team is on a four-game winning streak, prevailing as +170, +137, +225, and +146 underdogs in consecutive games.
L.A. plays elite defense up the middle and has a very underrated bullpen that, over the last four games vs. the Jays and Yankees, has allowed just three earned runs through 13 2-3 innings of relief. All their best arms will be available today, as well.
Starter Mike Mayers might be undervalued in this spot, too. He's not a regular reliever opening this game. He is stretched out and has a very respectable .203 batting average against over his last 30 days.
I would likely need at least +145 or +150 odds before getting down on the dogs, but I’m certainly leaning on this being another close game — and one the Angels can win.
Prediction: Angels moneyline (+140 at bet365)
Over/Under analysis
The Angels have allowed just six runs over their last four games and although those numbers are unsustainable, they did come against some of the best bats in the American League. They also managed their run-suppressing ways with a mix of great starting pitching, bullpen, and defense. Add in an order of unrecognizable batters and Mike Ford hitting fifth, and this is a very good team to target for an Under.
The total has hit 9 at some books as the oddsmakers are expecting the Yankees to have some offensive success vs. Mayers. The Yankees have not seen him this season, which favors the pitcher, and he likely won’t see the order a third time, so there won’t be plenty of time for New York batters to adjust. When a pitcher’s 4-seam fastball has 10.9 inches of horizontal break — which is 42% more than league average — adjustments will be key.
The Yankees’ offense didn’t return to early-season form with Stanton coming back and might have to win another low-scoring game tonight as a big favorite. Taillon should be able to keep things under control versus a rough LA lineup and thanks to his great command — 24 walks in 128 innings — if Trout and/or Ohtani do some damage, it will likely be without much traffic on base.
Both bullpens have everyone available and we will likely see both teams’ best arms come out of the pen tonight.
Prediction: Under 9 (-120 at FanDuel)
Best bet
Taillon will be able to get through six innings today.
The Yankees have no issue with leaving him in even if he gets touched, and with the state of seven of the nine LA batters coupled with Taillon's command, the New York starter should be able to get 18 outs today.
He’s topped this prop in three of his last four, and with the pen extremely injured, he should get 95 to 100 pitches again tonight.
Over the Angels’ four-game winning streak, the opposing starter has gone deeper than projected in each game despite giving up some runs. Mitch White went five innings and didn’t even have a total out market, Alek Manoah went Over 16.5 outs with a seven-inning performance, Ross Stripling went six innings, and even Frankie Montas went six frames last night.
In a projected low-scoring game, Taillon will flirt with 18-plus outs.
Pick: Taillon Over 17.5 outs (+100)
