The Chicago White Sox will try to salvage a series split when they host the New York Yankees in their fourth and final game this Sunday at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The White Sox climbed back to the .500 mark (16-16) after beating the Bombers 3-2 on Saturday night. The Yankees still reign supreme in the American League at 24-9 after taking just their third loss in their last 20 games.

Yankees vs White Sox betting preview

Starting pitchers

Nestor Cortes Jr. (1-1, 1.41 ERA): Yankee fans have been calling him “Nasty” this year, and Nestor Cortes’ stuff merits the nickname. He fanned 11 Texas Rangers batters when last seen, allowing only one hit through 7 1-3 frames. Cortes is up to 42 strikeouts through six starts (32 innings), but a sharp rise in walk rate (eight over his last two outings) is a cause for concern.

Michael Kopech (0-0, 0.93 ERA): Michael Kopech hasn’t pitched deep into games for the White Sox this year, but he’s been effective in each of his first six starts. Kopech – averaging a modest 4.83 innings per appearance – has a sub-1.00 ERA and a sub-1.00 WHIP through 29 innings of work. The converted bullpen arm has punched out 30 batters.

Yankees vs White Sox picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

Michael Kopech and the White Sox should be able to earn a series split with a win over the Yankees on Sunday.

Kopech went far enough to pick up his first quality start of the year last Monday, allowing no earned runs to the Cleveland Guardians in six innings of work. The Texas native has been extremely stingy through his first 29 innings of the year, seeing just three earned runs against.

The Yankee lineup has been incredibly dangerous of late, as Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge have combined to bat 21-of-55 (.382) with eight homers and 23 RBI over the last week, but Kopech has the edge having hardly ever seen these batters.

Meanwhile, strikeout maestro Nestor Cortes will be trying his hand against a Chicago lineup that has the third-fewest strikeouts in the majors over the last two weeks (87). If he tries to get too fine in this one, he could easily get himself into trouble. Cortes has eight walks in his last two starts alone.

The White Sox have had the benefit of seeing Cortes a couple of times since 2019. Although his stuff is much improved even from last year, it’s worth noting that Jose Abreu and Tim Anderson weren’t really fooled by Cortes in prior meetings. The pair have combined to bat 4-for-9 (.444) with only one strikeout and a walk against the Florida native.

It’s hard to argue that the Bombers don’t have the bullpen advantage in this one with their second-ranked unit by ERA over the last two weeks (2.14) going against the South Siders’ 18th-ranked relievers (4.66) in the same span, but Chicago’s staff has pitched well in spots this series.

Kendall Graveman worked two scoreless frames against this lineup on Saturday night, Reynaldo Lopez recorded his sixth straight scoreless appearance against New York on Friday, and Jose Ruiz (eight holds) pitched a clean inning on Thursday and has been rested since.

Trend bettors should note that the White Sox are 45-20 in their last 65 games against left-handed starters, including Saturday’s triumph over Jordan Montgomery.

Prediction: White Sox moneyline (+106 at WynnBET)

Over/Under analysis

The pitching staffs in question should not let this game get out of hand. The Under looks like the right side.

Cortes could end up getting himself into trouble, but it’s hard to envision him letting the floodgates open. The worst-case scenario for him would likely be an early departure, but the Yankees bullpen can carry the freight if necessary.

Chad Green and Michael King each worked multiple innings in a game this series, with the former shutting out Chicago through two frames on Thursday, and the latter allowing just one run over 2 2-3 innings on Friday.

Clay Holmes – who’s authored a microscopic 0.52 ERA through 17 1-3 innings – pitched a clean frame on Saturday but has worked back-to-back days and more than one inning on numerous occasions this year.

The White Sox are 24th in runs per game this season (3.63), so this is far from the most intimidating offense in the majors.

Kopech should be able to give manager Tony La Russa enough outs in this one so as to avoid the back of the bullpen for this tilt. The Bombers’ lineup can be streaky, as evidenced by their 19-7 record to the Under in their last 26 games after scoring two or fewer runs in their previous contest.

Prediction: Under 8 (-105 at DraftKings)

Best bet

It’s difficult to feel confident that the White Sox relief corps will outduel that of the Yankees in this one.

While Chicago may hand this unit a lead, it likely won’t be a large one, as explosiveness has been hard to come by for their bats in 2022. The better bet on the White Sox is just to take them to prevail in the first five innings.

On Saturday, La Russa batted Yoan Moncada second and Luis Robert third, and it paid early dividends. Robert singled in the game’s opening run as well as the game-winning one in the ninth, and Moncada – who’s hit safely in six straight games since returning from injury – homered in the third.

Look for this lineup to wait out Cortes, draw some walks, and pounce on any over-the-plate offerings.

Pick: White Sox first five innings (+105 at DraftKings)
