Two of the top playoff contenders in the MLS Western Conference face off Sunday as St Louis City plays host to Austin FC at Energizer Park.
Both teams have struggled to score goals this season, but Austin FC comes in off a 2-1 win over San Diego last weekend.
The hosts fell 1-0 at Philadelphia as they battled through a wave of injuries, but they look to remain unbeaten in their history against the visitors.
In my St Louis City FC vs. Austin FC soccer picks for Sunday, March 30, I explain why fans are likely in for another match without scoring.
St. Louis City SC vs Austin FC picks and predictions
My best bet: Under 2.5 (-115 at TonyBet)
My analysis
Last weekend’s 1-0 loss to Philadelphia saw St Louis City do two things for the first time all season—lose a match and concede a goal. And that last part has been a while coming, given that only two teams have performed better than expected than St Louis.
They’ve conceded just one goal through five matches despite having an xGA of 5.51 on the season. And the most impressive part is that they’ve achieved this with two different goalkeepers after starter Roman Burki’s hand injury saw him miss the last two matches.
And they’ve needed to keep that terrific defensive record, given St Louis City has managed to score just four goals this season. And given the opponent’s record at both ends of the pitch, I’m expecting a low-scoring affair when Austin FC comes to town.
That’s because the Verde and Black have managed to score just four goals themselves while conceding only three. In fact, their first four matches all ended with identical 1-0 scorelines, with the club winning two and losing two of those outings.
Both clubs are woefully underperforming at the offensive end, with four goals apiece despite xGs of 6.3 for Austin and 5.5 for St Louis City. And each has played in four matches where the total goals scored have not eclipsed one, including a pair of scoreless draws to open the campaign for St Louis City.
The two matches that produced three goals for each club came against LA Galaxy and the Seattle Sounders, both of whom are near the bottom of the Western Conference. Those two clubs have also allowed a combined 17 goals.
Both sides rank in the bottom 11 sides in shots on target, shooting accuracy, and shots on target conceded per 90 minutes. They also both rank Top 5 in shooting accuracy at the defensive end. We’re in for another defensive struggle, and we’ll take the Under here.
St. Louis City SC vs Austin FC same-game parlay (SGP)
Austin’s win over San Diego FC last weekend is the only time in five matches for each side that have seen both teams find the back of the net. Neither team has found a proven goalscorer this season, and I’ve got this projected as having one goal scored at most.
As such, it’s hard to see both sides scoring here.
If someone does, I’m backing it to be Austin. While they’ve never defeated St Louis City in their history, losing three times while drawing at home last spring, they do have the best player in the match.
Brandon Vazquez scored his first goal for the club last weekend, and he will have Myrto Uzuni back in attack following the international break. Given they won at LAFC just two matches ago, I feel Austin is the better overall side and will get a result.
