With Trae Young and Julius Randle out and Jalen Brunson questionable, tonight’s clash between the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks will be missing some of the usual star power – but both teams are desperate for every shorthanded win they can get.

The Knicks are clinging to the No.4 seed in the East, despite losing seven of their last 10 games, but they picked up a big win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday behind 28 points from Donte DiVincenzo.

It’s been a rough visit to New York for the Hawks, who slumped to a pair of heavy losses against the Brooklyn Nets last week. Those setbacks loosened Atlanta’s grip on the final play-in spot, and an 11-18 road record doesn’t inspire confidence in the NBA odds for a bounce-back performance here.

Get the lowdown on tonight’s matchup with my free NBA picks for Hawks vs Knicks on Tuesday, March 5.

Hawks vs Knicks predictions

As you would expect from a Tom Thibodeau team, the New York Knicks are fighting and clawing to stay in the Top 4 in the East and weather the storm with Julius Randle and OG Anunoby still sidelined. To make matters worse, Jalen Brunson limped off in the opening minutes against the Cavs but seemingly avoided a serious knee injury.

Despite running on fumes, this shorthanded Knicks team won’t be throwing in the towel. Instead, it just means more big minutes on tap for Josh Hart and Donte DiVincenzo.

Thibs has asked a lot of that pair, and I’m honing in on Hart to put up another monster stat line tonight against the Atlanta Hawks, who were outfought and outplayed in two losses to the Nets last week.

Hart played 45 minutes against the Cavs on his way to an outstanding 13-point, 19-rebound, 10-assist triple-double. That was on the heels of an 18-rebound effort in 47 minutes against the Golden State Warriors.

So this is a volume play as much as anything. Hart is a terrific rebounder who will crash the boards at both ends of the floor, and he’s going to be on the court for 40+ minutes, barring foul trouble.

Though his scoring can be a little more erratic, I’m taking the combined points + rebounds prop for Hart tonight. He’s had double-digit points in six straight games, including a 23-point effort against the Detroit Pistons.

The Knicks need every minute Hart can give them here, and I see that translating to the Over on this prop.

My best bet: Josh Hart Over 25.5 points + rebounds (-122 at FanDuel)

Hawks vs Knicks same-game parlay

Josh Hart Over 11.5 rebounds

Donte DiVincenzo Over 22.5 points

Knicks -3

With the Hart points + rebounds prop unavailable for an SGP at the time of writing, I’m swapping in the plus-odds Over for Hart to finish with 12 or more rebounds. A combined 37 boards across his last two outings highlights his ability to clean the glass.

I’m staying away from Atlanta player props after last week's dud displays at Barclays Center. Instead, I’m tagging the DiVincenzo points prop into this SGP – for some of the same reasons that I expect Hart to shine.

The Hawks struggled to contain wings Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson in the losses to the Nets, and DiVincenzo should walk into plenty of volume tonight, even if Brunson is cleared to play.

He knocked down six 3-pointers on the way to 28 points last time out, and he had 23 or more points five times in February. With a big workload here, I like the Over.

I’m also trusting the Knicks to cover this small spread. They’ve been a steady home team, with a 20-11 mark at MSG despite all the injuries, and there’s still a chance that Brunson gives it a go tonight.

Sure, New York is just 2-8 ATS in its last 10 contests, but those struggles pale in comparison to an Atlanta team that’s 19-41 ATS this season.

Hawks vs Knicks spread and Over/Under analysis

The Hawks won their first two games after Young’s finger injury, but the debacle in Brooklyn put a spotlight on the creativity and spacing that the visitors are missing without their star guard.

While Atlanta still has Dejounte Murray and Jalen Johnson as difference-makers, the Knicks are narrow favorites tonight – and that points to the hosts’ ability to grind out results, even with DiVincenzo, Hart and Precious Achiuwa among several players currently handling a hefty workload.

New York has won the past three meetings and seven of the last 10 matchups, including a 116-114 victory in mid-November. But the Knicks’ overall recent form is more troubling – they’re 3-7 in last 10 games, denting their chances of homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

They might be catching a break from the schedule-makers here, though, with the Hawks dropping four of their past five road games.

Offensive fireworks could be in short supply, with both teams navigating key absences. The Knicks have hit the Under in their last six games – and that’s also been a winning ticket in seven of Atlanta’s past 10 outings.

The 215.5-point line feels about right here, but it could be jacked up a little if Brunson is available, given his impact on this New York offense.
