My analysis
After kicking off a five-game West Coast road trip with a 2OT loss to the Sacramento Kings, the Miami Heat got back in the win column — and a game over .500 — with a 114-98 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night.
There’s not a lot of mystery to Miami’s formula for success. In its past five wins, it's held every opponent to below 110 points — and four failed to reach the century mark.
The Heat are seventh in the NBA in scoring defense, allowing just 110.1 points per game. But over their last five losses, they’re a different club, surrendering at least 120 points in each.
At 20th in the league in scoring and amid the Jimmy Butler saga/suspension, Miami simply can’t outscore its problems if the defense doesn’t show up.
One of those losses during that recent slide was against these same Utah Jazz, who went into Miami and laid a 136-100 beating on the Heat.
Overall, though, that’s just one of the few bright spots for the Jazz, who have just two wins in the last eight.
They’re trying to bounce back from a gut-punch loss to the Atlanta Hawks, as a Trae Young half-court pull-up was true at the buzzer, dropping Utah 124-121.
The Jazz don’t offer much resistance on defense, allowing 118.5 points per game, a Bottom-5 mark in the NBA. It’s been even worse during this home slide, if you can believe it, as Utah is giving up 120.6 points per game, with teams shooting 48.5% from the field and 36.7% from 3-point range.
There might not be a better chance for Miami’s offense to get cooking and build off that last win. And after what it did in Miami, Utah might be able to keep up.

Bam Adebayo is coming off a 19-point, nine-rebound, five-assist game against the Warriors. It’s the fourth time in five games he’s gone Under 10 rebounds, and we like that trend to continue Thursday.
Adebayo finished with eight boards in that blowout loss to the Jazz on January 4.
Lauri Markkanen lit up the Hawks for 35 points on Tuesday, the first time he’d cracked the 20-point plateau in four games.
He has what seems like a reasonable 24.5 scoring line against Miami, but he tallied just 15 against the Heat in the previous matchup and has scored 25 or fewer points in 10 of his last 13 games, going back to December 1.
It will be another scoring-by-committee effort for the Jazz in this one.
