Hornets vs Grizzlies Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game

Memphis can fill the bucket with the best of them, while Charlotte has stepped up its offensive production of late. Look for points aplenty in this matchup, per Eric Rosales' NBA betting picks.

The Charlotte Hornets are on a season-best three-game win streak, and they put it on the line against one of the West heavies tonight when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Grizz have their own three-game win streak and are pegged as hefty 12-point favorites in this Wednesday battle at FedExForum.

My Hornets vs. Grizzlies prediction has Charlotte keeping pace with the NBA’s highest scoring team en route to an Over. Read below for my free NBA picks for January 22.

Hornets vs Grizzlies prediction

My best bet
Over 239.5 (-110 at bet365)

My analysis

I'm not sure what’s gotten into the Charlotte Hornets, but they look far different on this three-game bender than the team that had just eight wins through the first 36 games of the season. They kept up their winning ways with a 110-105 win over the Dallas Mavericks last time out.

Yes, their win streak can be suspect, as they’ve beaten the lowly Utah Jazz, the 10th place Bulls, and the Luka-less Mavs, but they are scoring at a 117.3 ppg pace, a far greater output than their 28th overall ranking of 107.1.

It’s good they’re in their best offensive groove yet, because the Memphis Grizzlies are built to run teams out of the building. They lead the league in scoring at 123.1 points per game, shooting 48.4% from the field and 37% from 3-point range.

Memphis hammers opponents on the margins to rack up their totals. They are second in the NBA in points in the paint at 57 per contest while putting up 16.9 second-chance points, 19.7 points off turnovers, and 17.3 fast-break points — all Top-6 marks in the NBA.

Last game, they showed they can win without their offense carrying them, gutting out a 108-106 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Normally, the Grizzlies rank 22nd in scoring defense at 114.9 per contest.

This will be the first of two meetings between these teams this season. Charlotte has won the last two, but Ja Morant and Desmond Bane missed both contests, and Jaren Jackson Jr. played only once. Overall, Memphis has won seven of the last 10, and many in a destructive manner with the margin of victory being at least 13 points in five of those wins.

I think the Charlotte win streak stops here, but taking the points is risky with the possibility of a blowout. Memphis is one of the best home teams in the NBA, sporting a 16-5 record and a +12 point differential.

My best bet is to target the total. Both teams can score, and they tend to light up the scoreboard when they meet, cashing the Over in five straight and eight of the last 10.

Hornets vs Grizzlies same-game parlay

Over 239.5

LaMelo Ball Under 28.5 points

Ja Morant Under 1.5 made threes

Let’s target these all-world point guards to put together a three-leg SGP.

LaMelo Ball has been great this season, averaging 29.3 points, the fourth-best scoring clip in the NBA. But it’s his all-around game that’s come together of late vs his scoring eruptions.

Last game, he went for 23 points but added nine dimes and seven boards in the win over the Mavericks. Since the calendar turn, he’s topped 28.5 points just once in six games.

Part of that is his poor shooting clip, which is at 40.3% from the field in January. He’s also doling out 8.2 assists, grabbing 5.5 boards, and adding 1.7 steals. He’ll be prominent, but on trend this month.

We’ll finish with Ja Morant, who had 19 points and seven assists in the win over Minnesota. That included an 0-for-4 mark from 3-point range.

Morant is shooting just 23.1% from distance in five January games, the outlier being a 4-for-11 game against the Rockets. Otherwise, he’s failed to connect for two triples in all other games.

Charlotte is surprisingly strong at defending the three, holding teams to a 34.9% clip, the seventh-best mark in the league.
