Nets vs Grizzlies Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Memphis Shuts Down BK

The Brooklyn Nets are nowhere near contenders, and the lack of offense plays a major part in that. With Memphis' defense looking respectable recently, our NBA picks aren't expecting Brooklyn to have much to cheer for tonight.

At least the Memphis Grizzlies can chalk up this lost season as an aberration, a one-year dip due to a run of injuries. The Brooklyn Nets have no such light at the end of the tunnel. They are mired on the treadmill of mediocrity.

At some point, that reality sets in late in the season, and that point may be this week after the All-Star break. Brooklyn has been blown out twice this week, and there is little reason to put faith in it tonight despite NBA odds labeling the Nets as slight favorites.

Let’s find the best way to fade Brooklyn in my free NBA picks as I preview the Nets vs. Grizzlies on February 26.

Nets vs Grizzlies predictions

The Brooklyn Nets have a few long-term pieces in Mikal Bridges, Cam Thomas, and perhaps even Ben Simmons. But this roster knows it is nowhere near contention, and the front office knows it is nowhere near the cellar.

The only other big pieces signed through next season are Dorian Finney-Smith and Dennis Schorder, both experienced enough to know there is a strong chance they are not with the Nets come October, one way or another.

Far be it for anyone on a keyboard to suggest Brooklyn will mentally check out the rest of the year, but recent results rather strongly suggest that will be the case. The Nets have gone 17 of 72 from deep in two games since the All-Star Break, a 23.6% clip that underscores how bad things may get for them.

Not that Brooklyn was a good shooting team before the break, ranking No. 14 at 37.2% in the month before. What has worsened the change is that the Nets are shooting a bit less from deep, down nearly three attempts per game compared to that month.

Sure, the Timberwolves deserve some credit for suffocating defense on Saturday, but that was without defensive linchpin Rudy Gobert. And the Raptors’ defense has been among the NBA’s worst of late. Brooklyn’s struggles this week cannot be easily ascribed away by looking at opponents. This is an internal issue.

The Memphis Grizzlies have a decent defense, ranking No. 16 in defensive rating across the last 10 games. And the Grizzlies know what the future holds. Their primary contributors right now will all return next season. Showing promise now will burgeon confidence moving forward. Jaren Jackson Jr., GG Jackson, Vince Williams Jr. and Ziaire Williams all have reason to keep playing well, to keep playing hard.

Led by the defending Defensive layer of the Year, Memphis’s defense should shine tonight against the absent-minded and inept Brooklyn offense.

My best bet: Nets team total Under 108.5 (-110 at FanDuel)

Nets vs Grizzlies same-game parlay

Nets team total Under 108.5

Grizzlies moneyline

Dorian Finney-Smith Under 6.5 points

If fading Brooklyn’s offense in a game with a one-bucket spread, then betting on Memphis to win this game outright makes too much sense.

It may come across as armchair handicapping to suggest GG Jackson, Vince Williams Jr., and Ziaire Williams have more want-to right now than Cam Thomas, Royce O’Neale, and Cameron Johnson, but that is the reality. And in that case, let’s bet on the players with an absolute need to win to best secure their rotation spots on what could be a contender next year.

Adding in doubt of Finney-Smith risks jumping on a trend after it has expired. Since he returned to the lineup in the week before the break, Finney-Smith has made exactly one field goal in four of five games. He played more on Saturday, thus going 4 of 9 from the field for 11 points, but even with more playing time, Finney-Smith should struggle to put the ball in the hoop.

Nets vs Grizzlies spread and Over/Under analysis

Late on Sunday afternoon, the Nets opened as one-point favorites for this road game. That growing to -2 before you returned to the office on Monday morning is most likely a reflection of Memphis’ entire season, somewhat overlooking that the Grizzlies have covered the spread in their last four games by an average of 7.6 points.

The total opened at 215 before quickly dropping to 213.5. It then rebounded to 214.5 by Sunday’s end and toggled between 214.5 and 215.5 throughout Monday, eventually settling where it opened at 215.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
